Guess That Noise Game!!!

OK this just started to happen about a week ago. I get this noise, like a bag of marbles in the tranny. weather in neutral, or in gear, clutch in or out, I can hear that noise. After 3rd gear, road and engine noise take over, and I cant hear it any more. The fluid level is fine, I changed it out with red line oil about 2 years ago. Clutch feels normal, clutch pedal feels normal. Any ideas?

Yeah, get the bag of marbles out of there!

In all seriousness though, that really doesn't sound good, and hopefully you're still under warranty

Are you sure it's the tranny? Sounds like maybe a heat shield on a cat?

It's hard to say without hearing it, but from my experience that sound usually happens when a bearing is going bad. Does it make that sound with the clutch in while the car is stopped and in gear? If so, the noise isn't from the transmission internals, as nothing is moving at that point. There is a TSB out for a flywheel shield rattle though.

Edit: Google these for more info:
TSB 08-3-4
RATTLE/BUZZ/VIBRATION - TRANSMISSION CROSS-MEMBER EXHAUST MOUNT - BUILT BEFORE 12/3/2007
TSB 08-2-10
4.6L MANUAL TRANSMISSION - SEPARATOR PLATE BUZZ - BUILT BEFORE 12/13/2007

My monies on throw out bearing. If the noise changes demeanor when you put your foot on and off the clutch, it'll be the throw out bearing. An unfortunately somewhat common problem. Depending on how many miles are on the car, you may want to stick a new clutch in there when this gets done because to get to that little sucker, the whole trans has to come out (as I recall). Or, just leave it noisy and do it when you do eventually do the clutch.

Well, your description of the noise and the way it comes and goes exactly describes a heat shield rattle on a cat converter. I'm not a geeky computer person, nor was that an off the cuff reply.

I completely understand where you stand. I'm sorry I can't help you out, so I'll leave your thread alone. Hope you solve your issue for cheap!

Lets see its been a while since I posted, but I had the same thing. Noisy tranny as well.. took her to the mechanic and looked her over. I have over 180K miles on the tranny as well ended up replacing her trany since I was starting to loose gears. Cheaper to buy a new one than to have it rebuilt.

Oops forgot the noise did go away, this tranny is really noisy though even from day one on the original. Try using Royal Purple ATF
