Did you know that a set of 255-45 R18 Michelin Pilot Sports costs $251 US each. Ouch. :bang:

Is that size considered an 'odd' size? Seems to be.

Yes, that is an odd size currently, at 27.1" tall, not many passenger cars can accomodate that tall of a tire.

After the new Mustang comes out, it will start to become more common, then the prices will slowly drop.

That is a pretty standard price for a odd size tire. When I first got my 96 Volvo 850R its 205/45 R17 tires were only made by Pirelli and cost $250/tire. Four years later, and 3 sets of tires, they were made by several manufacturers and were as low as $95/tire from Yokohoma.

If those are the size tires you need be patient.

Dan, you still thinking of getting 18's aftermarket? $$$ $$$

by the time you get them on the car with a nice set of wheels, you are going to be down $2500. Not cool considering we will already be dropping a ton of cash on the car as it stands. Unless Ford comes up with some kind of magic deal, I don't want the 18's THAT badly

When I was still considering an '05, I had already budgeted for $3,000 of aftermarket equipment over the first two years. I usually do that so that I am prepared for what I will inevitably spend anyway

Just another reason I'd Like the V6's 16" Wheels. I remember when the 87 Thunderbirds went to a 16" wheel. 16's are common place now but the 18's are still not widely used enough, so the Tire Makers Gouge you because they don't make as many Tires over 16" sizes. Man those 16" tires were Expensive, but God, Over 200 a piece for tires?

Any size Michelin Pilot Sports will be rather pricey. And, no, the 255/45-18 is not a common size. For what it's worth, 275/40-18's are very close in overall diameter --- 26.7" vs. 27" for the 255's. 285/40-18's are even closer at 26.9", but that's a really wide tire.

Hopefully, the Pirelli PZero Nero will be available in 255/45-18 soon. I like the fact they are made at Pirelli's new plant in Georgia.

Barring that, I'll probably run Sumitomo HTR Z II's. $161 per and they are great tires. I've got them now on my car and they hookup, corner well, and are quiet.

All:

There are several other brands that have the 255/45-18, might want to search 1010tires.com besides the TireRack (this is not a testimonial, I haven't bought from 1010tires, just recently have been tire shopping and they carry some lines that Tirerack doesn't).

I found the following with 255/45-18 availability and fairly low prices...
Nitto NT 555
Falken Ziex ZE-512
Kumho Ecsta KU19
Hankook Ventus Sport K104

I just put some Nitto NT 450s on the wife's 2001 Maxima SE and am happy with them so far and they look a heck of a lot cooler than the stock imPotenza RE92s!

The option is still open IMO. Especially if Roush, other aftermarket companies release some amazing looking rims. Obviously I'm finding out that waiting for the factory rims/rubber is definately the cheaper way to go. But I'm not dead set on it just yet.

Hopefully when the 06 Stang gets fitted with BFG KDW's in that tire size, we'll see prices fall.

Hey I was just browsing Tire Rack for the 05 stang and they have rims on there that go to 10.5 inches on the width. Does that mean 10.5 will fit under the wheel well??????? Hmmmmmm.....

Wheels & tires are just expensive. But the difference it makes is worth it. Looks and handling for one price is still a good deal.

I've got 17x10.5 in the rear of my '03 with 315s. It "just" fits. But 10.5 is too wide for the front on the '03 or '05. Biggest reasons I went so wide in back was for handling & to fill in the huge SN95 wheel gap which the '05 does not look like it has. Plus I always wanted a full size Hot Wheels car.

For the '05 I'm going with the recommended 18x9 with 255/45-18's all around. Should work great with the new chassis/suspension set up but lowering is still an option. Will probably stay with F1's as they are by far the best tire I have ever driven. Fantastic in the rain especially for a wide tire. Ride is very good however some roads create quite interesting tread noises.
