Gas gauge funkiness.
Gas gauge funkiness.
First, did a search. Didn't find this particular thing 'round these parts.
So, I was toolin' around town, and there is this particular underpass that you can, if the circumstances are right, not stop whatsoever and stay at a really fun speed, for there is a concrete barrier to prevent someone from using the exit lane from the underpass.
Vroom.
So I do this, because it's fun to throw the car a little every so often. Now, I know, I know, it's not a great idea, but seriously, perfect opportunity, why not, didn't hurt anyone.... I know I was bad, and I'm sorry, but fun.
Anyway. The thing is, after doing this, the gas gauge plummeted to 0 gas left, and the warning came on "9 miles to empty". Now, I had about a 1/4 tank left before that awesome sling to the left, so I'm pretty sure I didn't have Awesome drink that much gas.
What I'm guessing happened, then, is that the gas level sender is on the left side of the saddle tank, and the funtime slinging flung the gas to the right side of the tank, so the gauge was readin' nothing 'cause it was all on the wrong side?
A little later, an opportunity to slightly sling the car back left did in fact fix the gauge. I suspect that I'm right, maybe.
Still. Kinda weird. Did I miss the memo about this?

If the fuel pump is anything like the fuel pump in the 99-04's there is a float right on the fuel pump itself. Im guessing it got hung up on the plastic mount inside the tank.
I just replaced a fuel pump in a 2001 and noticed this.
I'd guess the float just got hung up and shifting back the other way freed it up.

I've had it happen before, usually takes a few min and then goes back to normal. I think the gas gauge only updates every so often do you got a reading where all the gas sloshed over to one side of the tank and then had to wait for another update when it settled out
