I actually met the guy at the gas station on base a month or so before this article was published and he was just going on about the problems he's had. Although I agree that Ford should do more about the gas fill up issue, I asked him why he bought a first production vehicle and then complain about the bugs. He just stuttered... :-)

I've never had a problem filling my GT with gas. It was built in June 05. I even use the auto fill feature on the nozzles. No mess, no problems, and it shuts off when full. I do feel for the guy if he had three gas tanks installed and none work correctly. Ford should help him out.

Mine used to spill a little out of the nozzle when it topped out, but I just grabbed some paper towels to put under the nozzle. Only other problem I had was after I had a sensor replaced (from an engine light) and the goober at the dealer didn't install the seal right. I spilled a bunch of gas at the local wally-world! Funny thing is after the tank maintenance , no more spills at the nozzle....

I do pretty much the same thing. But I wrap them around the entire nozzle and stuff them into the filler a bit.

Mine was built on 6/6/05. I never had a problem until last week at a Mobil station. It seemed like the nozzle didn't fit well in the filler neck. It was an older station, and I am waiting to see what happens next time I fill up at my local station.

Hey scamblr,

Can you do me a favor. If you see this guy again, let him know that I am dumb enough to buy his lemon. I will give $10,000 cash in hand. That should be a fair price for a lemon don't you think? I can be there in about two hours to complete the transaction. The Ford dealer out by us is an authorized US warranty shop. They did my tank last year in less than two hours. I have been squaring away most of the people in the Vilseck and Grafenwöhr area with TSB info thanks to this site. I love to help out my fellow Stang brothers and sisters. But I think this guy is beyond help.

No doubt, though, I would be able to make a nice glass of lemon-aid out of that "lemon" if he takes me up on the offer.

I had the same problem with my Bronco... it irritated the hell outta me, but I found that it really depended on what gas station I was going to. If it happened at one, I never went there again. ... problem solved. by the way.... it's for sale too if anyone is interrested. Perhaps he'll trade. Don't tell him about the gas problem though.... I think it would be funny to see the look on his face the first time he figures it out.

I sent him an email lol.

"
First off, you probably get allot of emails like this, but if you choose to take the time to read mine, I would appreciate it.

Alright first things first, er, second I suppose. When buying a first year model car, no matter who made it, it will have some quirks about it. And the tanks on early/first production S197 Mustangs have a problem with filling up. Not all have it, but allot do. Ford does has a TSB for this, and you can get it replaced under warranty. This is no reason what so ever to label this American icon, a Lemon. Frankly, it upsets me, but I am a hard core Mustang enthusiast, so its no surprise there.

I would be MORE then happy to buy this "lemon" from you, but theres no way I will purchase it for blue book price. After all, you said it is a "lemon". Who buys a "lemon" at blue book price? This way I can have 2 S197 GT's, since I'm currently ordering one from ENCS over here. Let me know! "

Mine was built october of 04 and I never had any problems filling. However, up here in Canada our gas pumps don't have that rubber"sleeve" that sucks up the gas vapours.
