I've just never been one to take anything. Maybe it's my pride... I like to think it's how I was raised... but I don't want to get something for nothing. I want to earn it.

I just want to be fair about this. Because of the hurricane and my current situation, it's just not meant to be that I own a car right now that costs me hundreds of dollars a month in the car note and insurance alone. Not to mention this rather expensive "mod" bug I got and can't find a cure for. Right now, it's best that I put the money and time into building a house for my family. And that's just how it has to be. One day, once the house is built and things get back to normal, I'll buy my car back from whoever wins it if we do the raffle afterall. That is, if they want to sell it. But, no way would I buy it back for a dollar. Whoever won it better keep it, take care of it and drive the heck out of it like I do.

 

I'll do a raffle....but if I win...expect me to not take delivery.

 

I'm with FireDragon and Surfn, raffle the car off and those that want to help Ian and win can donate it back for a $1.

It is up to the individual that way and those that enter the raffle have the same chance. It is Russian roulette on whether or not Ian gets a car sold back to him for $1 but it does do what the original intent of the raffle was, auction off the car to those willing to buy a ticket.

 

I'll drive over to California and make you take the keys.

 

I'm in with whatever way you decide. I had also thought of just collecting the money and just paying off the car, or if winning sell it back for a buck or refuse to make the trip to get it.

For those who think there are better causes, give to them, no ones stopping you. I have already given close to $1K split among several charities. That would have paid for the hood I want. This is a little something extra, like getting a lottery ticket only I am choosing that Ian wins.

 

This is a good idea. If people want to give more, the odds would be better to win. Instead of selling a certain amount of tickets, once $30k was reached, the raffle would end. The least your chances would be is 1 in a thousand. A heck of a lot better than the lottery. But, with people wanting to get in for $50 and $100, the odds would probably double that.

 

Oh, don't worry... they have auto transport services for the person who won the car and refused to pick it up.

As far as buying it back for a dollar, not going to happen. If you want me to have it back... hold onto it until I can afford to buy it back from you for what it's worth.

That's the spirit! I'm pretty confident by the reaction to members here alone that I could raise the money. I just need to contact a lawyer and see if it's legal. Or, if anyone wants to step up and host the raffle for me... someone who has done a raffle before and knows it's legal in their state. A raffle, that is, where the money was raised to actually pay somebody for something versus raising money for an actual charity.

 

Just a heads up....you'll probably have to pay taxes on the money you receive from the raffle. It will have to be reported as income.

 

Good point. There's also the 2.? percent paypal charges for transfers, plus the 30 cents per transfer. I would most likely be using paypal to accept payments for tickets. That's close to a thousand dollars on $30k. I sent paypal an e-mail about lifting their $3k a month maximum for premiere accounts, and for them to send me any info on what they offer for raffles. There would also be the fee for transporting the car, say if the winner was halfway across the country. And, like you said, taxes. So, at the end, if I raised $30k, I'd get around $26k. At that rate, I might as well sell it.

 

I'd gladly buy a couple $30 raffle tickets. If I won, I would give the car to my best friend who is in a little financial hole so he could sell his car and get out of debt. I also know the car will be taken care of, and he would probably be willing to sell it back in the future if that situation arose.

 

What about this idea?
Individual agent holds raffle in state where it is allowed. Winning ticket for 05 mustang. 40K in tickets sold. Agent purchases 05 mustang from Ian. Red Cross or other agency receives 10K. That should get by any legal issues I would think.
The raffle will then benefit a charity. The car will sell for full price no hassles. Someone will get an awesome ride cheap.

I don't think you are on the right track here... We are talking about raffling off a car. That mean you put up a little cash at the chance of winning my Mustang. Nobody is going to give anyone money to buy a new car. Try starting up a thread on that and see where it goes... but don't come in here trying to make a joke, and in turn making light of my situation. It's out of place.

When you all get done patting yourselves on the back for what great humanitarians you all let me know. I love seeing comments about how you rather help someone keep their 3rd car that they might lose while building their dream home than help someone who just lost their home. Just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside don't it.
