First time to the track...

This past Saturday some buddies of mine and myself went to the local 1/4 track to get some runs in on a test and tune night. I took my 2005 stock Gt (minus an axle-back). I made 5 runs all together. Since this was my first time ever driving a car at the track my times were less than impressive. Also my stock shifter struggles to go into 2nd gear at high RPMs which means I have granny shift 2nd. Anyhow on to the numbers.

My first 3 runs were pretty terrible ranging from a 15.0 to a 15.8. These runs I spun quite a bit, missed second once, and my 60's were just plain bad.

My last two runs were decent I thought, but for some reason I still missed out on 13s. The 4th run I ran 14.4 at 101.9 with a 2.1 60'. I had wheel spin in 1st,2nd & 3rd. My buddies said with that mph it is an easy 13 second car. My final run was also 14.4 but only at 97.x it was very similar to previous run but was faster all the way to the 1000' mark but I believe i let off the go pedal at the wrong line/light.

Anyhow I had a great time, and am looking forward to going again, maybe with a good shifter, and good tires.

Sounds like fun. A mgw shifter and some good rubber on the rear would make a huge difference.

I don't think 14.4 is too bad for a stock GT on your first day at the track. My buddy ran a best of 14.2 on his first day but he had a CAI and a custom tune.

I am putting together a second set of wheels & tires for the track. I got a set of new takeoff stock 17x8" silver bullit wheels for $301 shipped on ebay. Then I found 2 Falken tires that had about 50 miles on them for $90 from a guy on Craig's List. When I pick up the 275/40/R17 MT ET Street Drag Radials ($188 each) later this week, I'll have a nice set for the track for about $800 total.

I really need the traction! My vert with the KB SC only managed a best of 13.37 @ 107mph with street tires at street pressure. Hopefully I will at least be in the 12's with the drag radials. I don't want to be much faster than that because I'm not going to put in a roll bar.

I should have also mentioned that it was warm and sticky that night, so the car was running hot on all of my runs. And yes Kanchoo an MGW shifter is what I've been eyeballing. Could you tell me what kind of shift **** comes with those ?

05slvrgt, your buddies are correct that 101.9 mph is plenty to pull off 13's with some practice. Here's a general rule to figure out what an average 1/4 mile ET should be based on the mph: take 1375 and divide it by the mph. In your case, 1375 / 101.9 = 13.49. That's what you can expect your car to run with good, solid traction, and lots of practice racing it. Set up the ideal gearing and suspension, and the car could run a little quicker than that, but 13.49 is a good goal to shoot for and very attainable with traction and practice.
