First oil change

OK, I know this has been discussed before, but was there ever a consensus on when to do the first oil change in a new Mustang?

I try to home mine done every 2500-3000 miles or so...the dealership & manual say 5K but I told them change it anyway. I don't put a lot of miles on my car so it takes a while to put on 3K miles.

If you drive like Frank Bullitt, every 100 miles. If you love your car (like we know you do) the owner's manual is perfect. Follow the "break-in" changes and then go every 5K. If you are scared about debris from manufacturing, do it at your earliest convenience the first time and then follow the manual.

Oil changes are cheaper than a colonoscopy, if it is tearing your as$ up, change it!

I did the first at 500 miles. I was surprised at how dirty the oil was at that interval. There was no visible metal flake in the oil.

I did the second at 1500 mi and will do the third at 3000. Frequent changes with the 5w50 full synthetic is going to break me.

500,3000,6000,9000,12000,15000.you get the point. I usually always drive it hard (severe duty) so I like to do it at every 3000.

crazyhorse, 5w50???

If you follow what is in the Ford maintenance schedule, then you meet the requirements.

My regimen has been like Stoenr, however, I am not sure if I "severe duty" as much

I think I did the first oil change in my 05 at 750 miles. Given that the engine is new its likely a good thing to change it early the first time. After that, however, I'd follow the owners manual and change it every 3k miles.

I agree. First change about 500 mi.

Severe duty applies just as well if you don't drive much, in which case the 3000 mile interval or by time interval.

I changed my first one around 1000 miles, then again at about 5k, and now I change it ever 5k miles, definatly not bad since the owners manual sais every 7500 miles. I have been using the motorcraft semi synth, however at my next oil change, 10,000 Ill start using mobil one.

I did 750, 1500 and 3000 with the plan being every 3000 now.

However, since the car is stored 5 months out of the year, I change it in the fall before storage and then when it comes out of storage in the spring. I'm lucky if I put 3000 miles on it during the warm weather driving season, so it's pretty much spring and fall for me.

OK, I'll change it at 500 miles just to make myself feel better and every 5K after that, although I've always changed it every 3K. Hard to change to 5K after all those years of having 3K drilled into my head, but no use throwing money in the street. Thanks everyone.

Yeah, just think of how long ago the 3K mile interval was introduced. Back then the engines were carburated, ran super dirty, and the oil technology was not even close to todays standards. Think of how much engine and oil technology has evolved over the past 30 years.

Oil technology and engine tolerances/technology.
Environmental tip: Don't be a jerk and throw the oil away. Recycle it, plenty of places are around who take it for free. Thanks.

Yep, almost any oil change place takes it, and a lot of auto parts stores take it too...all free.

Yup... they get paid by oil recyclers for the oil they collect. Its a win-win situation. We get rid of the oil without further polluting the environment doing it... and the businesses make a couple of bucks for storing it for us. Capitalism rocks!!!

I change every 5k (oil + filter). I also use a full synth (Castrol). Lots of folks swear by Mobil1 and others insist on dino-juice and then there's the blended crowd. Whatever you pick will probably be fine (unless you get the $.50/qt recycled stuff - I'm guessing it's still around). Use the factory recommended weight (don't let grandpaw tell you that unless you use 30wt the aliens will get your brains). Changing the oil is probably the best thing you can do to keep it running for many many miles.

The AutoZone near me doesn't recycle the filters but O'Reilly does but I usually go to AZ. Here in TX there's a fine for dumping oil or putting oil or a filter in your street garbage. Marti's right, capitalism rocks!
