Folks,

My 06 GT should arrive at the dealer in a few weeks and I've already been asked about Ford's extended warranty. They offer a 5 year/150,000 KM (90,000 Mile) bumper to bumper extended warranty for about $1600,00. Has anyone purchased the Extended Service Plan on a Mustang and does anyone think it's worth it based on past experience?

I didn't get it, but I think you have till the original runs out to buy it. I might: my in-laws got it on a car they sold me and we used it and it paid for itself with one repair (A/C).

 

You should be able to talk them down from there....that is a starting price....check the other threads on this topic and see how low others got them for, you should be able to do about the same.

As for whether or not it is worth it...only time will tell. I got it.

 

I went back and forth with the salesman and got him to give me the 6yr/75,000mi warranty for $1100. I need the years more than the mileage (I'm at almost 9K miles now after 1yr 2mo) and I thought that deal was more than worth it. After three years, I'm sure the AC or something else will die on me, and I'll appreciate the free repair. In the end, the "comfort" level is worth the money.

 

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it. I will most likely get it if I can talk the price down a bit. I like peace of whats left of my mind as well. When you think about it, an A/C compressor alone can set you back $600-$700 plus labor.

Hey there Michael..... I opted not to get the extended warranty. In your case, this price quote of $1600 is for 2 years.....and an absolute rip-off IMO. You already get 3 year-36,000 mile bumper to bumper for free with the car. Sure you get 54,000 more miles worth of warranty, but that's only if you drive nearly 20,000 miles per year. Extended warranties definitely give peace of mind, but I also consider my own driving habits in the equation, and I'm not one to beat my car to pieces. Some warranties may be a decent buy, but IMO the one you were quoted is N O T...... and defintely enjoy your new pony when it arrives.

Check on line, I got a quote and my dealer said he could not beat that one. It is directly from Ford.

Get a 3rd party warranty. Much cheaper and more time coverage. Dealer warranties are a rip-off.

I got something very similar. I also need the years not the miles. Since mine is an 05, I figure there is a good chance I will need it --- 1st model year of a major redesign. So far good service, but it is still early. Her first birthday was 2/23.

I don't have '05 or '06 Mustang, but I did bought extended warranty on my F-150 when I bought it. It did cost me around $1,400, but I got 7 years (not sure about mileage). Since I rarely drive my truck (1,400 miles in 9 months of ownership) I don't have to worry about problems in the next 7 years.

 

33 years, I have never purchased one. I'm Thousands of $$$$ ahead of any future problems. On average their a waste of money. Read the Contract completely. Keep in mind that their selling those extensions to make money, not LOOSE it.

I think a real lemon would show itself within the first 3 years...

 

Purchasing an Extended Warranty should be put in the light of buying insurance. You buy it to give you financial protection should something go wrong and in return you get peace of mind. I don't think anyone buys insurance with the intent to collect...given our druthers, we would just as soon not collect.

Keep in mind that all automotive companies calculate the mean time between failures on all their parts. Some feel that they have better MTBF's, so they offer longer warranties. Ford's is 3 yr/36,000 miles. They offer the extended warranty at a price where they feel they can assume the risk...just like any insurance policy.

 

Another consideration in my choice of warranty (6yr/75k) was that I wanted the total coverage warranty on the car to outlive my payments on the car. Since I've got a 5yr loan, I will have another year of warranty coverage even after I'm done paying it off. It will basically guarantee me no additional expenses (beyond regular automotive maintenance) while I'm under the financial burden of the loan itself. Naturally, if you paid cash for the car, or are paying it off more quickly, you might not feel the need for the longer warranty.

 

Waste of money. Do you really think you'll spend $1600 on repairs the first five years? Not unless the thing's a complete lemon. The warrantys usually don't cover wear items, like brakes. Someone above mentioned appreciating a free repair--it's not free! You paid for it!

On a computer controlled vehicle.. Yes..

All it takes is one electrical issue or major component failure (e.g. transmission etc) and you will hit $1500.

Its $300/year. If you don't have it (extended waranty), and end up with a $2000 repair, you aren't happy.. If you don't use your extended waranty then just think of it as insurance...

I've gone through 4 automatic transmisions on our explorer (we no longer buy auto trannies).. and have seen friends with one single repair that cost them $500-$1000. Yes its less than the cost of the waranty but it was spread across the cost of the loan so it hurts much less than $500-$1000 at one time...

We just think of it as extra insurance...

Mark, you are so right about it being worth it. I am a Ford dealer, and tell people all the time, that these new vehicles have so many computers and electornically controlled components in them today, that if one fails, it can cost hundreds and even thousands of $$$ to fix. The real kicker with extended service plans, is the buyer of the car, always ask friends if its worth it. Most always say no way! Then when there is an issue, the vehicle owner, now stuck with a $$$ repair bill, that would have been covered with Ford ESP, is now mad at the salesperson, who offered it in the first place, but not mad at their friends. I always ask a customer who I am selling a car to, to consider the Ford ESP. They then tell me that either a friend, relative or family mechanic, tells them to not buy one of these, its not worth it. I then ask them, if you do have an issue, and you don't have the coverage, is your friend, relative or family mechanic, going to pay the whole bill for you? I personally got one on my GT. A 7 year, 36,000 mile Premium Care ESP. Only cost me $695 (I got it $100 over cost, since I am an employee of the dealership). Best insurance for a $30,000 vehicle IMO.
