Exhaust muffler location
I have about 1100 mile on my 2007 Mustang GT with a set of flows on it. Love the car but one thing that I have to say is that I prefer the sound of the 83-2004 Mustangs with the mufflers placed about midway under the car. That deep throaty metallic exhaust note.......I'm sure all of you know what I'm talking about. The classic 5.0 Mustang with flowmasters. To me that was what I thought was the classic late model "ford mustang sound" From an engineering standpoint I know why they put the mufflers where they did but I just wish it had that old shool sound.......Has anyone tried to replicate that exhaust note?

Prior to my '05 GT, I owned an '87 GT for 18 years since new. I put a variety of aftermarket mufflers on it, ending up with the flowmasters. They did sound good, except at freeway speeds when the flows resonated so loud you had to crank up the stereo to drown them out. I have the Flowmaster American Thunger Axle backs on my '05. I love the sound these things make. The only resonance these produce is at around 40mph. Freeway sound is hardly noticeable with the top up or down. WOOHOO!!

It's not the 05 that changed that....
... the mod motor sound different than the pushrod 5.0L
Even the 4.6 2v sounds different than the 3v but didn't have the sound you're talking about.

I agree with Boomer. That's a wide variation in sounds from 83-04. IMO, the 4.6L (96-04) never sounded anything like the 5.0L (83-93) no matter what mufflers you put on there. Like he said, it's because the 5.0L was a pushrod motor and the 4.6L was an OHC design. The only way you're going to get the "late model" 5.0 sound is to to get a late model 5.0.
As for old school sound out of an '05+ Mustang GT, that's a matter of opinion and you'll find more opinions than there are mufflers choices on the '05 so you'll just have to try to listen to several different ones. Try attending a Mustang show and asking some of the guys if you can listen to their cars.
If you don't like where the mufflers are, just take them off.
That's what I did... aong with many other Mustang owners. It's called the SLP kit. All it does is remove the mufflers and changes the tips.
