Electronic Horspower Gauge
#1
So I was watching Barrett-Jackson last week, as I'm sure most of you were doing, and they kept having this commercial for an electronic unit that you plug into one of the power units in your car and it gauges horsepower and torque, etc.
I don't really know what you'd call something like that, but it started to interest me. It's a bit of a drive for me to reach a chassis dyno, so was thinking it might be a good indication for me of what minor modifications do for horsepower. Of course I have no idea how reputable these kinds of devices are.
Has anyone had experience with a device like this before, and might possibly know a good one to pick up? Unfortunately I forgot the name of the device they kept plugging on Barrett Jackson, but I assume most of them are quite alike.

I had an older model several years back. I wouldn't bet any money on it, but it was fairly accurate.

I have the Gtec Pro RR, and as far as quarter mile times, it's pretty accurate, withn .1 seconds of the time slip. Actually, it ran almost exactly .08 seconds fast on over run, it was really consistent.
I've never tried to measure the horsepower and torque, but I might give it a try after I dyno the car again this weekend, just to see how it measures up.

The G tech is off a tick because it measures the 1/4 right when you slam on the gas, unlike the track where there is a small "rollout" before you start timing. At least this used to be the case to my knowledge.
With all the technology in that unit, it should be simple physics to figure out any HP gains.
There was an old school math equation that calculated HP based on vehicle weight and trap speed. I'll dig it up tonight.

Quick search found the following site with lots of good HP and ET equations such as this:
HP = Weight * (MPH/234)^3
