Drag racing with a 67 and an 06 Mustang
This past weekend I went down to the Immokolee track (1/8th mile) in South Florida to check out my brother (Ed) breaking in his brand new engine for his 67 drag strip mustang (BULLITT) and his buddy Tony running his 2006 body Mustang drag car. It was a great day and my brother's new engine performed right on target.
Ed's new engine is at its core a 351 that has been worked to a 438

Hey Burke, is that the same 06 that we saw wearing only primer in Orlando a few months back? It sure looks sweet!
Now for my drag racing ignorance question: Why do they cover the rear wheels in some of the photos?
Most drag cars with slicks of that size will run somewhere between 5-9psi in the tires. Even a 1/2 lb difference between tires can make a difference, and can cause the car to launch a little left or right, depending on which tire gets better traction. The last thing a driver wants to be worried about is steering the car all over the track when he is being pushed back into the seat by 2 or 3 g's.
A few years ago when I still had my 8 second Mustang, on a good run I could pretty much launch and go to around the 1/8 mile with almost no steering input. If I wanted to steer my racecar, I would have built a circle track or road course car.
Thanks folks
Yeah Steve hit the tire cover question - thanks man
Yeah Phil, like Dave said, same one we saw in Orlando - BUT it had the old engine in it at that time....
both engines built by the same builder out of Naples florida
They are both 438s and similar in set-ups
Differences:
Tony's '06 runs a sheetmetal intake manifold with 2 4-barrels
and a Liberty 5 speed transmission
Bullitt weighs about 200lbs less and as for the engine -
Aftermarket- DART 4 bolt main block w/enhanced oil passages
Edelbrock - 77219 aluminum cylinder heads
Custom made "one off" camshaft...
Example time for Bullitt with the brand new engine was
5.73 ET at 123.39 mph in the 1/8th mile
[by the way - are the vids playing alright for everyone??....]
