i think its amazing that ford competes with GM 50-60K sports car with a 30-35K car..
ford doesnt even bother with a 50K+ sports car

GM puts out a 500hp 60k vette
so ford builds a 500hp cobra for 35..40k for convert

then at the red light when the vetter owner says "ha mines still a vette" you can pimp slap him with a 20k wad of 100's

hehe

Hate to open the GTO can but that looks to be a better comparison than your vette suggestion.

You are comparing two cars that aren't even on the roads yet and where are you getting your pricing?

Then why are you giving the Z06 a $10k leap? Last years Z06 was stickered at $52k

Agreed on that. GTO is a better comparison, but Ford still has more power per dollar in that arena, too. (Mustang: 300HP@$24K = 12.5 HP per $1k; GTO: 350HP@$32K = 10.6 HP per $1K)

Also, in the original post, some real numbers would help support your statement. (Vette is 400HP@$44.5K = 9.99HP per $1k) We don't know exact HP for Cobra or the Z06 yet if those were the numbers you were trying to work with.

EDIT: I used base prices on all vehicles because without options because without options you are basically paying for vehicle performance and not creatuer comforts, which was the point of this thread I believe.

Very interesting. I am amazed GM failed to advice the Vette owners on its 500 hp Vettes. I guess GM just wanted to under rate it... for insurance purposes, of course.

The Mustang and the Corvette are two totally different cars. I am a HUGE Mustang fan, but I never understood why or who decided the Corvette should be our main competition after GM got rid of their Pony cars. We are comparing a 25K 4-seater to a 55k 2-seater. One is designed mainly for street and drag use, the other mainly for touring and road track. Does that meant that is all they are limited to? Of course not, but when taken out of those roles you see a good amount of mods put to use to better suit it them the new respective task. Sure the Cobra can be made as fast as the Corvette, but the Corvette can be made as fast as a Lambo or Ferrari (well I guess it is now anyways). Are you going to see a Mustang at Le Mans? Are you going to see a Corvette crusing around town on a Friday night with your 3 best freinds along for the ride? When Mustang wants to compete with a Corvette it comes out with the Cobra R. It went from a regular 30k Cobra to a 50k (or was it 54K?) 2 seat race/street ready big cube monster. Then it was a much more fair comparison.

If Corvette guys want to look down on us, who cares? We spent less than half the money they did, and can still run with them a good amount of the time. With a few mods, almost always. But for us to aspire Corvette preformance out of our Mustangs is kind of unfair not only to the tradition of the Mustang (affordable customizable fun for all whether it be V6 thru SCV8 vs. high powered sports car in Corvette), but to the designers who work hard to give us the car we have now (most importantly at the price we have now). Also keep in mind when the best bang for the buck awards come out year after year, the Mustang and Corvette both win...in their own respective car classes.

P.S. How does this thread have anything to do with the 2005 Mustang?

Neither of which have 500 hp. I don't think he knows what he was comparing.

I'm actually more upset that Ford still has no answer for the Vette. No the Thunderbird doesn't count. It should but it doesn't. The previous Cobra doesn't count either. HP does not a car make.

Corvette has a lot more going for it and that is factored into the price.

The Thunderbird is basically the closest thing that Ford has to the Vette right now, both seat 2 passengers, both are around the $40k price range, only problem is the T-Bird is too heavy and not powerful enough, guess thats two problems...

what i meant was for a lot less money the cobra.. (i can only imagine how sick the 06 cobra will be)... holds its ground against the vette

i love the 05 vette.. but i have a feeling the 06 cobra is going to be insane especially when you consider its price..cheaper than the tbird lol

I agree. This is a stupid debate. The Corvette and the Mustang share only one thing in common: they're both American-made automotive performance icons that have been around for 40+ years. With the Firebird and Camaro gone, that's why they get lumped into comparisons so often now, IMHO.

But that's where the similarity ends.

One is a two-seat, full-on sports car...the other is a four-seat (sort of) grand touring muscle car with a V6 sibling for the econo-crowd.

It would be more appropriate to compare the Corvette to the Ford GT supercar, although clearly the GT is yet another notch up the sports car pole from the Vette (though the new Z06 might help close that gap a little).

Actually, I would look for the price of the next SVT Cobra to be about on par with the T-Bird.
