Does a car seat fit in the back of the Mustang?

Does anyone know if a rearward facing infant car seat can be used in the '05-present Mustangs. My wife and I had our first child this past April, and my wife is putting pressure on me to sell my Mustang and get a sedan.

If I can demonstrate that a rearward facing seat fits in there safely, maybe I can convince her that I can keep the Stang.

I really don't want to sell my car, but I have to do what is best for the baby, as he will be riding in the car.

Without the base it will fit. Without the base though its much more difficult to strap the seat in using the seatbelt. The passenger seat has to move up quite a bit but its doable. We have used the mustang for trips with only one destination, thus minimizing the number of times we have to get the seat in/out. We have a minivan so the mustang isn't really the main mode of transportation. Do you have a 2nd vehicle? Hers? Once the baby turns around at a year old I believe the seat fits a lot better when its forward facing.

I had a forward facing car seat in the passenger side until just recently. It fit just fine and there was never a problem. The mustang has the latch system for child safety restraints and a 5 star crash rating. My Wife did need to move her seat forward some so there was enough room for kid’s legs.

My youngest has now graduated to a booster seat. I run with two boosters when I have both kids, and it works great. My Wife still has to move her seat up a bit to provide room, but it’s not uncomfortable. Since we have an SUV we take for family trips most of the time, the Mustang has not been an issue. Most of the time I run errands I only have one kid with me and were just as comfortable as can be.

I bet you’re a good Dad, work hard, and always put your family first. Unless your Mustang is your primary (or only) vehicle, she should let you have your little bit of enjoyment! My Wife knows the car is much more then transportation to me and respects that. It’s a much better hobby then bar hopping or womanizing too!

Good luck!

Tim

One more thing... If I'm not mistaken, you can begin to use a forward facing seat when the child is about a year old (I think they do this by weight, better check and verify). I never tried a rear facing one in my car, but since its latch equipped I can't imagine it not being safe.

My wife has a Mercury Mariner, and will do most of the driving. But, I will have to drive him around here and there, so my car needs to be infant friendly, and be able to accomodate a rearward facing seat.

I will look in the owners manual and try installing it.

Thanks for the info.

As long as you don't have someone in the Frt Pass seat it'll be np. If you do it gets alittle tight for that person.

Once they meet the forward facing seat req's it's ALOT easier and the booster seat (my 5yr old) is cake!

I was driving my 6 year old son and 3 month old daughter around this past weekend as a matter of fact. The boy rides in the back in a booster seat all the time, no problem at all. The rear-facing seat fits but you do have to move the passenger seat forward a good bit. Depending on if anyone is in the front passenger seat or if so how tall they are this may or may not be a major inconvenience.

It is definitely doable but to me it would get old pretty fast if I had to do it every day. In addition to being a pretty snug fit, wedging the baby seat & baby into and out of the back seat without a back door requires a fair bit of twisting and contortion on my part. Especially in a parking lot with an adjacent car preventing the door from being opened all the way.

Kevin.

I have an 07 GT and in the rear seat center there are 2 welded loops just below where the back and seat come together (in the center of the seat) if you stick your hand down there you will feel them. These are for hooking the newer baby seats, which have hooks to attach to these loops.

There are also latches for a top strap on the back deck!

Yep, like others said you just have to scoot the passenger seat up quite a bit. My wife sits in there fine at 5'8", but any bigger might get pretty tight. My 4 month old daughter has been in my car almost everyday since she was born. I don't use the base (it's in the wifes ride anyways). I just strap in the babytrend infant seat with the seatbelt (Awesome seat btw, and worth the $$$). The wife drives my T-Bird, so it's not much better. We are used to the tight rear seat and 2 doors. That's probably why it doesn't bother us. A 4 door is in her future though. Where thinking of a Lincoln MKS.... looks niceeee!

Good luck!

BTW, baby's love the growl of a V8. Put's them right to sleep.

Thanks for the info everyone. Hopefully I can convince my wife that it is safe. I can't really picture myself driving anything else, especially a sedan.

I've used two different seats with the base and haven't had any problems. I'm using a cheaper seat now because it is lighter and easier to get in and out of the car with my 8 month old in it. My wife rides in the passenger seat with no problems except the seat back has to be almost straight up.

As far as safety the rear seat has the latch system installed therefore the seat belt does not need to be used.

My son likes to sleep in the car because of the nice steady hum of the Stingers.

I have an 8-month-old and our rear-facing car seat+base will fit in the back seat. The front passenger seat has to be moved up A LOT and the seatback has to be nearly straight up. I've never driven with anyone else in the car when I'm transporting the Tot.

Still, my son really digs the car when gets to ride in it. The rear seats are well isolated from engine noise (but the exhaust rumble is just right) and sunlight rarely finds its way onto his face, thanks the small rear quarter windows and raked, tinted rear glass.

As soon as he is able to face forward, I'll be able to fit another human in the front seat. Then maybe my wife will join us on our Sunday drives.
