differential questions
This is the first mustang I have owned that's newer than a '67. Im a bit confused about the rear end in the car.
I recently bought a 2006 GT. I have a whine coming from the rear end which is not too loud, but VERY annoying. It sounds like a ring and pinion setting problem.
The whine starts being noticeable at around 40MPH and up. It increases in pitch as the speed increases, decreases in pitch as the speed decreases to 40MPH, then disappears. The whine almost disappears at any speed if I hold the speed constant---typical ring and pinion setting symptoms.
What I don't know is 1) how to find out whether or not my car has a limited slip (positraction) differential or an open rear, 2) how to find out what ratio the rear is, 3)whether the "traction control" is a possible cause of the whine I hear, and 4) whether or not I diagnosed the problem correctly.
If there's anyone out there that can shed some light on any or all of the questions I have, I'd be really appreciative. I'm trying to get an idea of what kind of repair bill I'm looking at. As long as using the car as is won't do further damage, I can put up with the whine, but if using the car will cause more damage (or the noise gets louder) then my options are much more limited.
Thanks,
Jay

If you find out what it is, ill be real interested to hear. I've had that noise for years now.
The other guys nailed two of your questions, ill take a stab at another. As far as I understand it, the traction control has two interfaces: electronic throttle control and rear braked. There is no component in the differential. Traction-Lock is just Fords brand name for posi

Not necessarily. I have a manual with 3:31, which absolutely sucks. Good thing I already have the 4:10's sitting in my office.
