It would be nice, but there is some stiff competition in differrent segments.

We've discussed this before. Much as I would like to see it, I don't think it will happen. I think the Chrysler 300C has a better chance--several major mags called it a franchise saving car. There's also the C6, but I have my doubts about that one.

Nonetheless, the Mustang is definitely a contender.

Hey, like everyone else on this forum, I'd love to see it. But don't they usually give it to cars that seat 5 'comfortably'?

If cars were movies, the 'stang would be Resident Evil 2. Entertaining and fun has patootie to watch, but the Academy will give the emmy for best picture to ... Lord of the Rings. We here in S197ville could care less about trolls (as long as they stay on the GM forums), we just want to be entertained!

I have every confidence that this year's CotY will go to the Chrysler 300C. Several reasons:

1) Like the Mustang, it uses retro-future design theme that, compared to other cars, can best be described as "unapologetically-American". Winner: Tie.

2) The return of the V-8. While the 4.6L 24v going into the Mustang uses Variable Valve Timing (a rarity among american-built V-8's), the 300C uses the industry's first successful multi-displacement system, which GM will also be introducing within the next model year or two. Winner: 300C

3) Competition. The Mustang, essentially, stands alone, unless you want to count the 350Z and RX-8, noting that both can be had for under $30K. The 300C, however, outclasses its direct competition (Ford Crown Victoria, Pontiac Bonneville GXP) by leaps and bounds, and can also go head-to-head with Daimler-Benz E-Class, Cadillac STS, BMW 5 Series, Volvo S80, Jaguar S-Type, and Audi A6, all of which cost substantially more. Winner: 300C.

The new Mustang will definitely be awesome. If it weren't, none of us would even bother with this forum. To get Car of the Year, you have to not only come up with a REALLY good design, but it would have to use technologies and innovations untried by the rest of the industry. The Mustang doesn't do this, unless you count the color-selectable dash. The Mustang is making as big a splash as it is simply because it was neglected for far too long.

The 300C's trump cards will be:

--World Class status sedan at less than $35K

--Rear-Wheel drive American family sedan

--Multi-displacement system in their HEMI V-8

--300C is the reason for the first month in automotive history when Chrysler out-sold Ford.

As much as I would like to see "Car of the Year" next to the Ford Mustang, I'm going to be realistic about this. I have every confidence it will go to the 300C or perhaps even the Cadillac STS.

I'll have feeling that the Mustang will win car of the year over the 300C because of the price and the look of the Mustang over the 300C

yeah, i think it is going to be very close. dont think the STS will have a chance. but the 300C and mustang will be right there. the winner will prob be the company that donates the most monet to motor trend. we will have to wait and see what the mag's reactions to the stang are. they have been nothing but superb for the 300.

The 300C may have great power and handling, but.. it's just so darn butt-ugly. It's a rectangle on wheels. Oh and the "engine they got in that thing" isn't really a Hemi. It has a pentroof combustion chamber, as opposed to the HEMIspherical combustion chamber found in a real Hemi. The only feature the two types of engines share are "splayed valves located in a plane perpendicular to (instead of parallel with) the crankshaft" (From the current issue of Automobile magazine)

I'm sorry, but I don't get it? A franchise-saving car? I personally think the car is strange-looking...the only thing it has going for it is a hemi engine option...on a side note: I test drove a Dodge Magnum with the Hemi and that car has GONADS!!

The chrysler styling is bold, but imo, it came out very well, and the car has a lot going for it. It's a great platform with a few parts from the mercedes bins, it's quite classy, has the hemi as an option, and is an extraordinary value.

At work, a lady bought a 300 a few weeks ago and I heard no one talking about...I told a guy that I was getting the new Mustang, and people are asking when they can get a ride in it! (ladies first)

Both the 300 and Mustang feature very American cars with import construction (Benz and Mazda), it will be very close, the breaker is going to be how the editors feel the car does in everyday use...

Is the 300C new for 2005? It's been out for a while and not every car is eligible--they have to be brand new or significantly changed.

I'm not going to make a prediction because I don't what know kind of behind-the-scenes politics are involved in the MT Car of the Year selection but keep this in mind:

1) The Mustang is an American icon
2) The Mustang has been called one of the most significant cars ever produced
3) This is the first total redesign of the Mustang in over 20 years
4) While the Ford GT is being called "The Pace Car for an Entire Company" (or something like that), the Mustang is the face of Ford. You ask anyone on the street to name a Ford car and the majority of them will say "Mustang".

The decision on COTY isn't always about how practical a car is but also about its significance in the grand scheme of things and how well the car peforms the mission to which it's intended, in the Mustang's case, "bang for the buck".

I definitely agree with TomServo92, those are big advantages that the mustang has that no other car can boast besides maybe the corvette, but the corvette doesn't impress me. The mustang is almost the only car that has survived the muscle car era and that's for a very good reason: America loves it!!! It has a reputation of getting people excited and not just a certain class of people. Almost anyone can own a mustang and yet each one is unique because you never know what the next guy has underneath his hood!!! B) I like the 300C, but you can't tell me that people are as excited for it as they are a car like this. I mean it isn't a car that just anyone can get excited about. I think that's where the mustang will win time and again. Whether this matters or not, I don't think there are too many 300C forums!!! So I'm givin my vote to the mustang, I think it can take it home!!! B) FrankBullitt05 had a good example, someone already has a 300C at his work place, they werent buzzing about that, they were buzzing about the car that isnt even around yet!! already wanting rides!! That's what the mustang does.
