Convertible Top / Black or Tan
#1
Live in Phoenix, Az
and am buying a new Mustang convertible.
Have heard different opinions on whether or not to avoid a black
top because of the high heat here.
Does anyone have any real knowledge if there would be a
difference between a tan or black convertible top?

car is for the wife...
three colors in te running...
mineral grey with black top
redfire with tan top
black with tan top
all three would have tan interiors
i hink she's leaning toward the mineral grey but
it looks bes with the black top and we're a bit
worried that black would be hotter than tan
any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Tan tops look great when new but eventually get stained. My wife has a 3 year old GT and the black top looks almost new. I seen similar cars with tan tops and every single one could use a new top.

I used to have a 2001 with a tan (parchment) top. It did get a little dirty looking after 3 or 4 years, but not too bad. Black will probably be a little hotter, but you can't beat the look on the black or mineral grey car. I think the tan would look better on the red with the tan interior. Decisions, decisions. Good luck!

All three are good color combos. You can't go wrong with any of them. It just depends on what you like. Don't worry about the heat. That's what AC is for.
My 95 GT vert has a tan top with parchment interior and I really like it. It doesn't take that much work to keep it clean.

I like the look of the black in certain colors and prefer the light grey interior over the parchment. If having the black top makes the car noticably hotter, I'll go with the tan & parchment. I agree with others on this thread that the tan just doesn't stay nice as long. Can these tops by Scotch Guarded?
In the heat of the summer, the top will definately be up in the afternoons. Morning and night are primetime around here that time of year.

IMO black top is the way to go... BUT whatever you decide, I know that you and your wife will LOVE the car and it will look FABULOUS no matter what color top you go with....... Good luck with your decision!

Mineral grey may be out of the running unless you can find one on a lot. Most new orders are for 06 models and mineral grey is not an option. I live in NC and ordered mineral grey with black top. Yet to be seen whether I get bumped to an 06.

Huh, the advantages of being old, ha ha. Yes, I have had experience with both tan and black convertible tops. Without insulation, black is probably 10 to 20 degrees hotter than tan on a hot sunny day. If the top is insulated (as I believe the 05 is) the difference is negligible.
That said, the black is probably a little easier to keep clean, and will probably look good longer. IMHO
So my advice is, get what you like better!

Blue - either
Red - Either
Black - Either
White - Either
Gray - Black
Black doesn't get as dirty as Tan IMO. I have a Tan top on my True Blue GT Vert and once you get stuff on it, it's virtually impossible to get off. If she's hinting towards the Mineral Gray, I'd get the black top if I was her.

When it's 115 degrees outside, isn't it going to be hot on the inside irregardless of what color the top is? Living in Phoenix I would be more worried in getting a convertible because it is easier to get stolen.

I too would like advice on this exact same topic. How much insulation do these tops have, and does it work?

The second part of the above response is more troubling. Auto theft in this town(Phoenix) is out of hand. My car will be outside in a non-secured lot during the day, and garaged at night. The car will also spend a fair amount of time at the airport parking lot. Either way, the vandalism/theft thoughts have crossed my mind, but I really want a vert.
Does everybody still agree that verts get broken into more often than other cars? I personally don't. I feel it's probably wrong place at the wrong time more than anything. If somebody wants to break into the car, their going to regardless if it's a coupe or a vert.
