Convertible Drone Theory

Wanted to throw this out and see if anyone has pondered if the bad drone we vert owners are experiencing with some axleback systems because of the hollow spaces in the rear where the vert struts fold down. Would that be the "B" pillar? It occurred to me after I read one of the numerous drone posts that someone said vert owners were complaining the most (like me ), and then I realized we might have two big resonance chambers there!!! Anyone know if there's space to wedge some dampening material in there? Looking for the big brains or gearheads to repsond on this one.

But, maybe 89Trooper will chime in.

This could also be somewhat due to the Rear end Ratio keeping the RPM's lower for a longer period of time...My vert has the 3.31 gears while my wife's coupe has the 3.55's which has a tendency to be out of the drone range quicker 1800 - 2000 RPM's. Just a thought. Now if even the 07 guys are complaining of the same problem that theory is right out the window as I am under the impression that all the 07 GT's received the 3.31 gears.

My FRPP's had bad drone when I first got them, since then I have gotten a tune, CAI, and a few miles on them. The biggest difference came with about 800 miles on them, the rumble is still there, but the drone is toned down a lot. With the CAI, I noticed a bit of a drop but that was also with the mileage too. With a tune, I asked for my shift points for my driving habits to be adjusted around that 1800 rpm spot.
I can live with the drone now. At first it was killer, and not in a good way.

Premium fuel should reduce the pre-knock grumble which translates into a louder drone.
Another method would be to buy Nylon-two 1/4" Neoprene Wetsuit Rubber and line the cavity as much as possible. Neoprene should absorb much of that frequency.

Never had a drone with either the original GT/CS exhaust set-up or the new FRPP GTAs, same as Buster. Maybe we should start a poll on this, and check out the results. Any volunteers?

All of the aftermarket, non-Ford, exhausts have drone except the corsas. If you don't think you have it, you either don't know what drone is or you don't spend a lot of time driving at that certain rpm. Drone is produced when the frequency of the exhaust matches the natural frequency of the pipes.

I have it on my Borla Stingers. It's right around the 2000 RPMs. I don't mind it as much, but the back seat passengers on my HOV trip are a little less enthusiastic about it.

semperfi65, Here is a military answer for question.

That's a good idea about the poll, get it started...

Whatever is stock vert automatic. I put Flowmasters on my Shelby and the drone in 6th is bad, very bad. Will probably change them out for Corsas.

Okay, that sentence got me thinking, is there a way to change the frequency of the pipes? You know, maybe putting a rubber bushing around it or something to deaden the vibrations?

I saw a V-6 take off muffler and it had a large what looked to me to be rubber dampener attached to the tail end of it.

Was that inside or outside the tail end pipe?

Outside and up behind rear bumper cover just hanging up there attached only to the back of the muffler.

Okay, I think you're talking about the actual muffler hanger, not a new part. It is made of rubber and has holes where the prongs on the muffler go. I've noticed a thread on here talking about replacing the over axle pipes, anyone with this setup have drone issues? I'm seriously thinking of a way to put a rubber damper around the pipe to deaden vibration, maybe I can hit Home Depot and see what they've got....

Terrible Drone On my '05 vert with Borla

I have a pretty loud drone....it is part of the muscle car thing so I am cool with it....it can certainly be a taint tickler though.
