Received the January 3, 2005 Autoweek today. It has the new convertible on the cover. The cover says "'06 Ford Mustang Convertible - Let the Fun Shine In". It gives a glowing review of the car inside the magazine. They particularly love the new stiff chassis and much-reduced cowl shake. They estimated base price for a V6 vert to be around $27,000 and on-sale this spring.

Two things stick out to me:

1. The cover screaming "06" convertible. It doesn't mention it in the article, but does this mean convertibles will be 2006 models? That could explain some of the rumors about no 2005 convertibles.

2. The car looks positively BAD!! I think it looks awesome! Granted, not everyone is a drop-top person, but I think it rocks!

I think it's a little early in the CY for them to make an '06 MY. The '05 MY vert will probably only run for about 6-8 months, but '05 nonetheless.

Technically if a car is launched after January first, it can be titled as an '06.

What they may do, is offer the convertible as an '06 model and introduce it with the '05 color pallete, options, etc.

Agreed. I thought the v6 was going to be around 22,000-23,000 and the GT was going to start at 27,000.

Also, let's call it an 05 and a half for nostalgias sake.

no kidding....i was thinking the same...27k for a V6 vert still not fully loaded seems like a lot...could easily be 30k or more by the time ya add on wanted options (and that's before TT&L)!...more then I'd be willing to spend for that car for sure..... :notnice:

Hope that base price comes in a little lower. Was that for a Premium trim?
How much over the cost of a coupe was the previous generation convertible? I was thinking 4 grand or so.

Don't panic too much, it does say it's an estimate (price). Let's hope that it is "worst case", i.e. fully loaded with every available option.

Thanx holderca1!
If Ford holds the line with the the convertible as they did with the coupe we've got no worries. Thanks again for the info!

$4000-$5000 is usually the cost difference between a coupe and a 'vert in this price range. $7K sounds LARGE!

Of course the original Mustang was introduced on April 17 1964 as a 1965 model. Only in retrospect was it called a 64 1/2. I predict there will be some running model changes in the spring on all Mustangs to 06 specs.

I would estimate the new V6 somewhere near the $27,000 Autoweek estimated, and a GT for about $32,000. This is just my hunch. I would rather guess on the high side myself. It seems it's pretty easy to get "sticker shock" when your expectations are too low. There's several GT's on lots around here with $29,000 stickers (loaded). A $3,000 increase for a loaded vert would be about right IMO.

Well there is a difference between starting at $27k and fully loaded at $27k.

The Detroit News also calls it a 2006, and gives their price estimates in the above link.

I feel $27k is definitely loaded. That'd be off base for a starter price.
