Clicking Noise In Dash

My dash has started making weird noises today. When I started the car this morning, it made what sounded like a gun going off five times and then stopped. Everything works fine, drives fine, all dash electrical works, but this.

After doing some searching, it appears this "gun noise" is tied into the HVAC diverter behind the dash. The rather large housing behind the stereo. When I turn the climate control button on the dash to feet, defrost or any part of the right side of the dial, no noise. Turn the dial back to the left, past half-way and it makes the "gun sound", five pops then it stops.

Anyone else ever have this issue, is so, how did you fix?

This did fix my issue, but in case anyone else has this issue...there are three of these, two on the right side (one above the other) and one on the left hand side of the dash.

Of course mine had to be the third one I checked.

Good to know, and that's one of those named rules of troubleshooting, no matter which one you start with, it's always going to be either the last or the frozen one.

Awesome write up and detailed solution. Craptastic plastic gears used where an over-current situation?? Come on now Ford, I know we all want to make money but obviously this won't last too long.
