Chipped Paint

I go out to my car after work and I notice a 1/2" X 1/8" inch chip, all the way down to the primer, on the driver's side door about 5" below the door handle. Some A$$hole must of hit it with his door but at least there isn't a dent.

I have touchup paint from Ford but it's thin and won't cover it very well. Is there better touchup paint out there that I can use or should I just take it into the shop to have them paint it. He told me on the phone it would cost approx $250.00

The only way to make it right is to repaint it. The best you could do is use the color touch up and then get some clear and dab it on until it gets thick enough then wetsand and buff...it will still be visible if you look but will be the best touch up you can do.

The paint on this car chips easier than any vehicle I've ever owned. My lawnmower has a better finish.

www.paintscratch.com might be of help

Coming from someone who works on these cars....I have never seen paint so THIN....but the chip all depends on what hits it....I've seen all kinds.

Sorry for OT - but about 3/4 acre - yeah, it's overkill, but so is 300 H.P.'s when the speed limit around here tops at 65mph.

That's really bad when your car matches your lawnmower.

Smokin pony, I have a small chip down to the primer or whatever it is and took it to a professional who is doing my hood. he immediately said the whole qtr panel needed to be painted to make it right. I said screw it and am living w/it.It is VERY small though. Good luck.

I go touchup paint with a toothpick, one dab at a time, over a couple of hours. After it's fully dried, a couple days later I'll use a cleaner-wax with a mild abrasive that helps smooth it out, then a couple coats of wax and polish. You can tell it's there, but not at normal viewing distance. (depending on the size of the chip)

Langka works really well. I used it for the first time last fall. It smooths out the blob of paint built above the surface. It isn't perfect, but it is less risky than trying to use 1000 grit sandpaper, and a polish to blend the touched up area in. Just be sure to use it within 24-48 hours of touching up the scratch, or it takes a while to even out the area with the surface. It won't harm the factory paint.
