Car may be totalled - insurance company and mods?

I crashed the Mustang last night and I think it may be totalled. At least the SO and I didn't get hurt.

Will I get any compensation for the suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, etc. that I've done? Anyone been down this road before? This is a first for me.

I am going to go out on a limb and say no.
You should call your insurance company first thing to make sure. If they say no then take as much as you can off the car before it dissapears for good.

unless you had an agreement worked out with the insurance company giving them a list and price of all installed options and they came to an agreement to cover them then no. they will only give you the valuse of a stock mustang

Unless the insurance company had a list of your mods and agreed to cover them they will most likely not be covered. When I purchased insurance for my Mustang through Geico they specifically stated only mods that I listed would be covered. Since I had none listed they would cover none. They stated I would need to submit mods as added for them to be covered in my policy.

Hey Jon,

I just went through this same thing. The main thing is that you're alright. Cars can always be replaced. As for the mods, it depends on the type of insurance you have. I had full coverage with State Farm. I gathered together all of the receipts that I could find and faxed them all to the adjuster. They might not cover the mods, but you want to prove that you had a lot more money in the car. In the end they gave me half of the money that I spent on mods in addition to the adjusted car's value. I never payed extra to cover the mods, so I believe that's pretty good. If the car isn't in too bad shape, you might consider buying it back and stripping the parts off of it and selling it. That is what I doing with mine. A lot of the suspension parts I had on my car will be transferred over to the car I just bought from you.

Glad you're alright!

P.S. I'll be overnighting that check to your business address tomorrow.

Rich

I currently pay extra for the mods installed on my Toyota Tundra through Geico. Not sure what would happen if I didn't pay the nominal additional premium.

DAYUM, JonW!

Glad you are OK. I think it's time to visit the local witchdoctor and/or the voodoo priest.

Sorry to hear that Jon... the important part is that you are OK. The car can always be replaced.

What happened?

Now, on to your question... the insurance company I work for will NOT cover mods unless you specifically insured them BEFORE the accident. Even then, the mods only will be covered up to 10% of your car's Actual Cash Value.

Usually those with mods are allowed to pull them off the car as long as the stock stuff is returned in its place.

Good luck to you. keep us posted.

Sorry to hear about that Jon. As mrkabc asked.....what happened? Hard to say how your insurance company will handle it. When my car was damaged due to stupid road workers they told me my car wasn't covered since it was lowered and modified. They were not going to pay for anything. After giving them an earful they covered everything but told me I had to tell them about every mod I do and they would adjust my rate accordingly. So even when I replaced the front grille, they wanted to know or it would not be covered if the car was in an accident, stolen, etc. I hate insurance companies with a passion.

I'll post details after I settle with the insurance company. It was a 1-car crash.
