Cool Can you change out the front rotors and calipers on a GT to allow for 16" rims?

Newbie Here,

I was wondering if it is possible to change out the front rotor and caliper on a Ford Mustang GT to allow for 16" rims? I understand that the rear rotor and caliper are identical to a V6 model. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'd like to go with a more retro look for my car and figured that 16" tri-bar wheels with white lettered tires would be a great place to start if its at all possible!! What I have is a 2008 Ford Mustang GT with the 18" Wheels and Large Brake Option.

Welcome to the site.

I can appreciate the look you want to achieve & I'm sure there is an aftermarket wheel & tire combo in the 18" size that will fit your need.

As for downsizing the brake system, I would strongly suggest you rethink that & go with the above combo. But, if you have to, the early S197 V6 Mustang's are riding on 16" wheels. That would be the brake combo your looking for.

Hope this helps.

You only have to change the caliper carrier and the front rotor and you will clear 16inch wheels.

However I would just get a set of second hand 17inch bullit wheels and use those. They look nice on the s197 and will clear the factory gt brakes.

Funny, some try to go the other way. I went to extra trouble and got rid of wheels that I liked to go with a set of brembo brakes. My motto is that I run the smallest wheel that I can fit to the brakes of my choice. I run 18x9 wheels that clear the brembo brakes.

DO NOT down size your GT brakes to V6'ers. There is a reason the GT has bigger brakes. The GT is about 300lbs more than the V6 and the bigger brakes are there to help stop all that weight. Totally not safe to do what you are thinking about.

does anyone know the size difference between the gt rotors and pads and the v6er rotors and pads? You will just have to slow down a bit sooner if you do the swap.

I'm pretty sure there is almost 1 inch difference in diameter between the V6 and GT rotors. And according to the Mustangs Unlimited parts catalog, they list Motorcraft front pads as the same for both cars.

+1

I can appreciate doing things for looks but compromising your safety and the safety of those that share the road with you isn't on the list.
