Well, I had to have a little fun this 4th of July and create a little smoke and noise to celebrate the holiday. My buddy has some better pictures of it in action with all the smoke, but all I could get was the aftermath....took them with my camera phone. Enjoy!!

Looks about like 10 bucks of rubber But you still have to love them burnouts.

I'm ready for some 255/50's, might have to start laying down 10 bucks at a time.

I probably had about $30 worth of rubber caked on my fenders after that..haha. That was an expensive show, but it was fun!! I am with Hatchman, I'm ready for some 255's, so these pizza cutters have to go!!

That was second gear too! All 200 feet of it! My neighbors were not too happy though, but they already knew I am crazy. haha.

You may end up being unhappy with 255/50's in the burnout dept. I've done a couple and I have no trouble spinning them, but not much smoke, and not much rubber on the fenderwell afterward

Now it could be just the brand, I've got the Nitto NT450's on mine, but I was certainly taken aback at the lack of that burning rubber smell filling the cabin.

Maybe Nitto is doing me a favor

$10.00 in rubber but how much in brake pads and rotors. You obviously did a brake stand on that one. good job

You might want to do a search on the forum. I know you are new but posting a question like that in this thread is not a great idea.

I have yet to burn some rubber and I have about 5500 miles on her. I guess I am babying her until I feel the time is right, although I have hit 105mph

The time was right the day you bought that car. Stop treating her like a baby. You know she wants to burn one.

Yes, I did a brake stand in first gear, and once I smacked 2nd gear I rode the brakes for a little bit also. By that time the tires were so hot and smokey, once I let off the brake in 2nd it just kept spinning and wouldnt hook up, so I just left my foot into it. Then I left about a 10 foot patch when I hit 3rd. So much fun!!!! That is why I bought this car, to run it hard and enjoy what the Mustang is all about!! You are only alive once, might as well enjoy it. So to you guys who are babying your Mustangs, its time to let the horse out of the stable and let it breathe. (or smoke..lol)

$10.00 in rubber
$0.75 rear brake pad wear
$0.53 clutch wear
$4.25 to wash the rubber off the fenders

The look on my neighbors face....

PRICELESS!

OK, I'm a newbie to performance cars, and to the stick. I've had my stang about a month and a half now and am, of course, totally comfortable driving stick now, have a good feel for her, etc. I've figured out how to spin the wheels when I want them to, to burn out a little on takeoff, but haven't really done it for much more than, say, 10 ft, and very lightly. A little burnt smell, but nothing cool like smoke and thick black tracks.

Since this thread is about just that, I'm wondering if one of you pros out there can give me some tips on really smoking up those wheels (and staying relatively in place while doing it, i.e. advancing slowly, not at normalish acceleration speeds with the wheels just spinning a bit).

When I spin the wheels, I basically rev up to ~ 4000 rpm, drop the clutch, and steer. I assume that the way to smoke the tires more is to do roughly the same - maybe more rpm - and after dumping the clutch, put your left foot on the brake and keep the right foot giving it gas.

Is this correct? Anything I'm missing? Is there an rmp range I want to try to keep her in?

Thanks!

Ya, I stink at doing a brake stand with a manual tranny. Mind you I can still get a good 30-40ft patch out of first gear

It would be easier if we had 3 feet! But you have the gist of it. On a stick you'll have to do a "heel toe" like maneuver with your right foot to have the brake depressed while your foot is on the gas. A little awkward, but it can be done.

Yes, you are exactly right. Although there are different ways that people do burnouts.....The way you explained is my preferred method. You generally want to keep the RPMs above 4,000 since the 4.6 really doesnt come alive till about that range anyway. Pretty simple, just rev it up, dump (drop) the clutch and the tires will spin. As soon as I let off the clutch I put my left foot on the brake and the stang will stop moving, but your tires will be spinning. On this mustang you have to start out in 1st gear...there just isnt enough low end grunt to get em going from dumping it in 2nd gear. Once you are sitting there stationary smoking the tires, you can hold it there till the tires blow if you want! haha. Just watch the RPMs though, I feather the throttle so I dont keep it up near the rev limiter. Once I get the smoke rolling and the tires nice and hot, I let off the brake and let her eat!!

Some guys, including myself, will occasionally do this....but they will hold down both the clutch and the brake at the same time with the left foot. Then rev it up the same as before and roll your foot over fast so it is now only on the brake and the clutch is let out as if your are dumping the clutch. I dont like that way because I think it is harder on the drivetrain since you already have pressure on the rear brakes.

Whatever method you choose....just have fun, it takes a lot of practice and tires to become a pro like me...haha. I should be the "Official MustangSource Burnout Pro"
Just remember to keep it out of the ditches! Good luck!!!

If you want to learn how to do break burns start out doing them in the rain or on a very wet road. The tires will spin easier and it will be more forgiving if you make an error. The ways listed above work well. I learned by simply putting the gas to 5500+, popping the clutch, and quikcly putting my foot from clutch to the break. Practice makes perfect. Make sure you do not overrev it and sit on the limiter either....keep the tach at 5000-6000 and enjoy the show

I have Nitto 450s also, with 275/50s in the rear, AND an automatic... and I have no problem roasting them. The pics below and this video were taken when I still had the stock 3.31 rear gears, too.
