Plus adding side scoops, side window louvers, and aftermarket hood.
Any opinions on what the cost would be? TIA.

For a hood, rear wing, trunk blackout, mirrors and front airdam, I was quoted $1,900 + tax if that gives you any idea. I know others are finding it cheaper. If you are talking a complete paintjob, I couldn't help you

I just got a number of estimates on changing the color of my car as well. In my case, I'm changing it from Mineral Gray to a Dark Shadow Gray with Shelby stripes and rocker panel stripes. I also had the shops factor in the of side window louvers and a ducktail in place of the factory spoiler.

The average estimate was $7,000 - $8,000 just for the recolor. However, I found a shop to,300 do the job for $6,300. Here is the breakdown:

$4,500 - recolor
$1,200 - Shelby stripes
$600 - Rocker stripes with "GT 350"

The shop is Graphics Unlimited in Martinez, CA (SF East Bay). They say that it will take about 10 business days to do.

My concerns are that it may be good to be true. Not only is the price much less than anyone else (I got something like 7 estimates), but they are doing it in much less time. Everyone else told me that they would need the car for around 60 days total.

There's an excellent article about just that question in this month's Mustang Enthusiast. The short answer is that painting the car is the shortest part.

First you have to remove everything from the exterior...all non painted parts. Second, in order to have the paint adhere correctly, the car has to be media blasted, which will remove all of the previous paint. Then you paint it, then clearcoat it...put everything back on.

But also take into account...ever looked at the sides of the doors? Those are painted too. There's a lot more paint than you think, and a lot more parts to remove...and then put back.

If you want a MAACO job, they'll tape everything off and spray it. If you want it done right, they've basically gotta disassemble your car.

Or trade your car in for a titanium 06. With the money you spent on the car + a $7000 paint job you could be close to a cobra price.

a paint job is just another way to customize a mustang to fit ones wants and desires. Do as you wish but I would guess 6-10 grand if you want the car done "right" though you could probably get it done for 3-4 grand if you want it done ok.

That why I am contemplating a black car. The engine compartment would remain black and not have to be painted.

I am planning on having the rear wing painted, the center portion of the hood painted, and the mirrors painted, all easily removable parts. If taken to someplace like Maaco, would they remove these parts to paint them? I wouldn't want the rest of my car near where they were painting them for the fear of accidents. What is the general quality of a Maaco paint job? Only reason I am asking is because I am in the military and move around quite a bit and if there is a warranty on the work, it would be hard to take advantage of the warranty unless it was a national chain.

George, it all depends on what kind of $$ you want to spend.

For a good re-color (Door jambs, trunk, etc.) you're probably looking at about $1500 or so, most of the labour will be taking things out and scuffing the original paint.

For an even better re-paint, look at about $3000 or so. They would take the doors off to paint every nook and cranny, perhaps even remove the fenders.

Let me guess, DHG ?

Perhaps you should wait for the '06 color list to show up. Ford knows there is a demand for a dark green, while it might not be the same shade as DHG, it could be close enough to fit your needs, or cost you a bit less for a repaint.

Because Maaco is a chain, it varies, but overall I have heard nothing but bad things about them.

The best thing to do is find a reputable bodyshop in your area. Look for one that does custom and/or high quality collision work. You will pay more money, but you will not even think twice about warranty issues. Look for shops that use PPG or Sikkens paint products. Look the car over for any flaws before you give final payment.

Has anyone heard anything about Sprayglo, they are a chain in the southeast, a guy here in the office is getting his car completely repainted in a few weeks so I will have something to look at to see how it looks.

I would think that media blasting a brand new car for a recolor is WAY over the top. Scuff sanding? Yes. Media blasting? No. If the factory paint is SO bad that they need to remove to properly paint the car, then I think it is safe to say that we have the beginnings of a huge class action law suite on our hands. And I REALLY don't think that is the case!

Thanks for the tip on the shop in Concord. I'll give them a call this morning.

I have a Mineral Gray GT, and I live in Clayton and work in Walnut Creek.

BTW - do you know of any good customizing shops in our area like West Coast Customs or the now defunct 310 Motoring down South?

Since the color is so close to the original, I mainly care about having the doors and the door jams painted. I am not at all concerned about the engine bay or the trunk.

Would Gold Coast Motoring do the job as described for $3k-$4K? If so, how long would it take and when can I bring my car in?

Thanks in advance.
