As you can tell from my signature, I drive a 2003 Accord Coupe with Navi. The car will have around 30k on it by the time the Mustang comes. I know that in order to sell the car to most people I'm going to have to pull the mods off. I have most of the stock equipment so that won't be too much of a problem. I've never sold a car privately before. I would do a trade in but I got low balled bad by the dealer and have a feeling most dealers will do the same until its back to stock. If anyone could share their experiences in selling a car privately I would appreciate it. I'm looking for specific outlets to sell the car and techniques to get the most money out of my car. Thanks!

I'm in the same department on this one... Although my car is a plain base 1995 Civic. In Vancouver we have a private-sales lot which is setup like a dealership with one or two salesmen. You drive up and they put your car on the lot for about the same price it would cost to run a nickel add or something in the classifieds.

They won't take just any car either... They make sure the cars are in good condition and aren't lemons. So they have a respect level too. I'd try and find something like that for private sales.

We have a classified ads just for our work. I posted my 02 mustang there to sell it hopefully before my order comes in. I also have posted an ad in our breakroom at work and my bf's work. I am thinking of printing a for sale sign and putting it in the back window to advertise it as I drive around town. I dont like the idea of putting it on autotrader.com because you get a lot of hoax replies, but that is an option that isnt too awful expensive as well.

I had a heck of a time selling my '98 GT with auto trader. I wanted a lot for it, but I couldn't even get anyone to make me an ofer to do some wheelin' and dealin'. If you put it in there with a good price, then you should get calls right away. .... I don't know, I was trying to sell mine before winter, and a Mustang with 3.73s isn't the best winter car, so you might have better luck.

Sold my 2000 within 2 weeks on AutoTrader. The people drove 90 miles to see my car and purchase it. Good Luck to you.

Try Brad's Mustang Chop-Chop. I believe they're in Alabama.

If you do autotrader beware of the scammers - I had one and that just turned me off right away. Of course, they're easy to spot b/c they offer more than your list price and don't want to see the car.. but remember, the cashier checks they send look real and the bank can't tell... that is until 2 weeks later when they bounce!

Funny, I have sold three cars in the past 10 years, all of them came from a big orange "FOR SALE" sign on the windows! I put them in papers, online, at boards at work, but the only bonafide offers (and eventual good sales) I got were from people actually seeing the FOR SALE sign with my phone number on it.

Last year I took my 97 loaded Explorer into Carmax and they quoted me cash price of $4500, way too low, I ended up selling it to a guy who drove past it for $7000.

Good Luck!

get a bluebook value of the car on Kelley Blue Book and either sell it in autotrader, vehix.com or ebay. You'll find a lot of people lookin for cars on e-bay.....

Carmax lowballed me on my truck, which is why it's for sale on autotrader. Didn't have much luck with autotrader selling my wife's 626 but it's worth a shot. With incentives on new cars, it can be difficult to sell a late model car at a reasonable price. With my car coming in early, I doubt I'll be able to sell my truck in time, so here's hoping to a decent trade-in offer...

Murray.....If it's purely your time in putting the car back to stock (since you have the parts), then I would do that before anything else. If your miles are that low, your Honda will be more appealing to a wider crowd this way.....and a good chance you will do alot better on a trade-in if you choose to re-visit this avenue IMO. The people at my dealership are signing waiting lists for the GT's......and they have a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd backups for the Silver I ordered. I have no doubt this is true, because I am the 2nd backup on the list for a Torch Red GT coming in late this week or early next week. Through all this 'waiting lists'...'backup lists'...etc., there is only one thing I know for certain..... I will only pay MSRP max., and not a penny more.

I guess what concerns me is that if I pull all the stuff off the car and then the deal falls through I'm going to have to put it all back on again. Each time thats going to take more money out of my pocket. The dealer gave me a price of $17,500 for the car and from looking at the car used on a lot dealers are asking around $23,000. I'd like to get close to $20k for my trade. Is that being unreasonable?

Take the aftermarket stuff off, put it in autotrader, and sell your aftermarket parts individually.

Car will pull more money, and you can recoup some of your cost on the aftermarket stuff.

If someone from Africa, or anywhere across the ocean tries to buy it, tell them to go do things the language filters won't allow me to tell you to tell them.

Murray....here's what I would do: Return your car to bone stock, and then see what you can get trade-in (quick fix) or list it for sale. Then all the aftermarket equipment, you should be able to list and sell on ebay....or other sale avenue. This should bump your car up to what you want for it overall....just a little more time consuming is all. I think we've all got a little more time than money, right? (unless our last name is Trump or we win the lottery).

Go to CarMax, They offered me 2000.00 more thay any dealer.
A co-worker was offered 11,000 for trade-in on his mini van, he went to CarMax after I made the suggestion and they gave him 3500.00 more.
