I've also noticed when you turn off O/D the car seems less giddy to get up and go. In heavy traffic I usually turn off O/D and I seem to idle a little slower so I'm not jumping on the breaks so much.

I've found that when racing it's best to just go into D and gun it. Also, turning off T/C only helps when trying to burn out in which case you should start in N to build up RPM. But I don't see how turning of T/C while racing will help you at all... It just means your more likely to slide around during the race which sounds bad to me.

Wow ... you rev up the rpms in N and then drop into drive? I would think bye, bye tranny pretty soon. I think it would be better to rev up in D with the brakes on.

T/C uses a combination of fuel management and braking to help prevent the rear tires from spinning. Both of which will slow you down.

Yeah I don't think 'neutral drops' are all the healthy for the tranny.....

If I am on surface streets and cruising 55 or under, I usually have O/D off

what did you run?
when the car was bone stock, I ran 13.6@99.83

I added JLT/DTP combo and ran a best of 13.7 @103

The car seemed to bog out of the hole, and it was pretty hot out, the 13.6 run was last November

The best I have run is 14.5. I have the hardest time getting out of the hole with these stock tires.

I started a thread on this very subject a while back. Here is the link. It's about three pages long and covers everything you need to know. I started manually shifting for a while, and it was fun, but I have since gone back to D because I have had better results. Power brake to about 1500 rpm, and then let off the brake and don't slam the accelerator, but ease into it a bit. I have gotten the best results from that. TC and overdrive both off. I've done many runs with me G-Timer and have had the best times from that setup.

And please do not rev your engine in neutral and drop it into drive. That is the quickest way to destroy your tranny. :nono: Probably quicker than taking it off yourself and beating it with a hammer.

Whew... well glad you don't actually do it. But, telling other people to do it is just as bad. Hope nobody ruins their auto transmissions after reading your advice.

I may have a Mustang but I don't actually hot rod or even race for that matter. The most I do is burn the ricers and what not off the line and show them who their daddy is.

Yeap... I'm a boring driver!

Which has its drawbacks because so many people want to try to get me to race. Then there's the "I need an ego boost so I'll just driver faster then you and significantly over the speed limit -- minivan drivers."
