I think you guys might enjoy this! I was in Bristol, TN for a family weekend this weekend and my cousin (who in part I blame for my absolute obsession with mustangs) says 'hey, did you know you can drive Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend for 10$??
I was like get out of here. So, my sister and I headed there for a little looksy....
You guys wouldn't believe it they were like 10$ please and sign this waiver...
I asked if there were any rules and they were like 'don't pass the pace car'.
So, i signed *without reading* their waiver
followed them waiving me down turn 1 and to the pit area.
There was one group ahead of me...so I was starting to get wired.
I turn to my sister and said ...you are gonna stay here and take pictures of me right? and she said 'Hades no, I am frickin riding with you' So I tought the guy working the pits my digital camera.....(pics attached)
Two of the people driving in the group ahead of me bumped each other during an attempt to pass.........
one was an eclipse and the other a 03 camaro z28...seriously modded..
Then I started to get nervous......(The guys were fine, and it was no major incident)
I did briefly feel good about them bumping....then i thought, I will not let some ricer bump meso, I just won't try to pass.
So, I came up with a plan....since i get five laps....the first i will just get a feel for it...then i will slow down and let the pace car almost catch up with me and then i will go for it kajones to the wall!!!!
The pace car was a new bonneville supercharged so it was no slouch
his hi speed was supposed to be 85 mph, but watching him during the group before me, he was right at 100 a couple of times.
I was the fourth in line for my group...pullin up the rear..i felt like retired Richard Trickle...the old nascar racer that espn would mention regardless of his status in race..
So, pole position was a sick camaro supercharged and some 14,500 in mods that he had on it...and it sounded like it.
Second another z28 lowered and looked kind of ricey but still fast and the other was one of those neon SRT-4's i think that was what it is...but it was no slouch either....
Bringing up the rear was me..
So, I pulled out and was quickly ready to try to pass that stupid lil neon half ricer and he was like blocking me...though if you were slower, you were supposed to move to the inside...
so three quarters of the 1/2 mi track down, i got off the throttle and waited to hit it until the pacer was comin up quick.
Then it was hold on....I hit 98 mph at one point...never heard a squeal of one of my tires... the car was AMAZING on the track....
Mine is bone stock with the exception of my stars and stripes pony from CDC
Anyways, by the end of the 6th lap i was back on the heels of the neon and well ahead of the pace car.
When i got off the track, the guy taking pictures...told me my car was the first stang he had seen out there and asked me what exhaust i had in there.....He thought it sounded better than any going around the track. He also commented on my great shifting ability and how it looked like i really found the sweetspot out of each corner.....and i thanked him....I just couldn't bring myself to tell him i have a 5 speed AUTO!!!!
Enough of my story....here is a picture taken while i was at about 90 mph on my tirade in about the third lap...and a couple of other pics.....I have a .avi short clip of me comin up on the fools in the other cars, but don't know how to host it, so if anyone has any ideas..
What a blast!!!!!
Dave

That's pretty cool Dave! They do that here at Texas Motor Speedway too. I haven't had a chance to go yet though. I think there is another one in November and it's $25 for 3 laps. I can't wait to get out there because it looks like alot of fun. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Cool story, man! Just one question... so you weren't allowed to pace the pace car? Because in your description it sounds like the pace car was behind you guys.. did you mean you couldn't go slower than the pace car, or that you couldn't go FASTER than the pace car? Just curious.

Not allowed to pass the pace car so he slowed down until it was coming up behind him and sped up to catch back up to it.

Yeah, honestly, the track is only 1/2 mile long...its all corners except where that first pic was taken...it doesn't take long if you slow down to let someone catch up even on the first lap...the whole thing was over in 3 mi and my info center told me i averaged 79 mph on the track...i reset it right as i got on the banking..I didn't want to get into passing anyone on the track so i decided to drop back by going down to like 45 mph during the first lap...as soon as i saw the pace car in my rearview i hauled booty trying to catch back up to the cars ..it was actually a lot of fun to do that...and, i didn't have to worry about getting bumped into a wall .....afterall, i almost gauruntee that insurance would not cover any damage occurring on a race track even if it was for a charity event...so, i decided to do it the way i did....and trust me it was like a rollercoaster....if you zoom in real close on that first picture, you can see my sisters hand on the top of her side of the car....she was holding on super tight ....she couldn't believe how fast this car could go around the corner...neither could i....

Great pix too, I just wish your sister didn't put her foot on your bumper. I cringed when I saw that!

I know, my sister and I had a good long talk about that.

As far as the red camaro, he was 'posing' in front of the sign...Its funny, he had that thing lowered so much he was rubbing tires going around the track...
