After reading the myraid of threads with people being rammed by the State for speeding, I thought I'd post a thread for anyone interested in fighting fire with FIRE! In this thread, I've included steps you need to take to PREVENT a cop from ever having a chance to clock you. I've also included honest ticket prevention links that took me weeks to find after dredging through the thousands of commercially biased sites. I think everyone who enjoys their '05 and doesn't want to pay THOUSANDS of dollars for a momentary twitch of the accelerator should take these four steps to greatly minimize your chances of getting ticketed:

1. Get a GOOD radar detector. I recommend the Esocrt Passport 8500 X50 or the Valentine 1.

2. Get a GOOD laser jammer. A laser detector is USELESS. Once your detector goes off, YOU'VE BEEN CLOCKED. I recommend the Blinder Extreme, although even MORE effective jammers may be coming out very soon, such as Antilaser.

3. Purchase PROVEN laser countermeasures such as VEIL (applied to your headlights), and for those of us with front license plates, Lasershield. With a good laser jammer and these laser countermeasures, laser guns are useless against you unless you're 150 feet from the cop! (they usually clock you at 2800 feet)

4. BE VIGILANT! If you're speeding safely, check your mirrors periodically. Remember, there is no defense against VASCAR (average your speed between two points of reference) except for purchasing a scanner!

I've followed these four steps and I have a perfect record. I've gotten lots of dirty looks from cops, though.

In this part of Texas we're blessed with miles of straight highways and few places for police cars to hide. They usually set up just on the other side of bridges to partially conceal their car. The best defense is just keeping a sharp eye out. Usually you can see them before they can clock you. And if you see a car up ahead unexpectedly hit their brakes, they may see a speed trap. I've got a perfect record as well, and I don't have any electronic devices on board. Just common sense and roaving eyes have done the trick for me

In NJ, all is illegal except Radar Detectors, the brand name Radar Detectors I've used is COBRA and they have been great!!

MaverickMLFD371, you're wrong. Unless your drive a big rig, laser jammers and radar detectors are legal in all states except Minnesota, California, and Utah. There are some very vague laws against laser jammers in Ohio and Wisconsin, but I've never heard of them being confiscated in those states. Any cop telling you any different in NJ is flat out lying in hopes that you are ignorant of the law.

05WindveilGT, the headlights is a reference to laser gun detection. Laser guns need to be pointed at highly reflective areas on a vehicle to get a speed reading, so cops only shoot at three areas of a vehicle: headlights/tailights and license plates. They can't get a speed reading anywhere else on the car.

Stangarang, you can still purchase a radar detector/laser jammer, but you run the risk of being fined by a LEO if they catch you with it. The fine is quite minor and I've never heard of them being confiscated before. So you can give it a shot if you wish.

Don't even get me started on Virginia, I HATE THAT STATE !!! Everytime, no matter what it is, for anything and eerything, I get pulled over by somew smart hiney cop and their big headed selves.

OBleeingme - so this stuff you can apply to your headlights and reduce the risk of them nabbing you?? I am liking the sounds of this. Also how about lisence plate covers, i.e. - the shaded ones you buy at pep boys, do they help with the reflectiveness and not get clocked as easy. Over here in PA we don't have front lisence plates.

we should create a sub forum for fighting tickets, both preventing them and fighting them in court, broken up with what state and actuall real legal tactics that work, no hypotheticals or things that youve heard that havent been confirmed, if I am bored a little later I will post all the things you can use to get a speeding ticket dismissed if paced by the cop.

This is exactly what Veil does. It reduces the distance in which laser guns are effective. Laershield is a license plate cover that does the same thing for your license plate. So instrad of a cop being able to clock you from 3000 ft., they'll only be able to clock you from 600 - 800 ft. Couple this with a good laser jammer, and you're invisible to laser gun as close as 300 ft!!

I was really skeptical of VEIL and Lasershield until I saw this video on radardetector.net:

I watched that video and it seems like with a detector, jammer, that paint on stuff and a black car you aren't going to be caught speeding by a laser gun.

on another note is was nice of ford to not put any chrome on the front of the new mustang.

I also read the Veil, @80 bucks a bottle, is the size of rubber cement jar. They suggest covering both sides of a surface if possible.

I've been a professional speeder for many many years.

I have a rather unique view of speeding and enforcement, as everyone in my family except me, is a police officer, and I have done many many ride alongs.

I see it like this:

There are two types of speeders. Professionals, and donkies named jack. donkies named jack, mount a detector in their window, set the cruise to x over the limit, get nailed with instant on radar, (or laser) then female dog about how they were caught.

First off, a professional speeder has to have the right equipment. Exactly what was outlined in the original post. Don't bother with any type of radar jammer though, as the passive (RMR) ones don't work, and the active ones its is a felony to use... much worse than a simple traffic ticket.

Further, I find it very handy to have a set of small binoculars in the car with me, for scanning down the road, when nobody is ahead of you. They have paid for themselves already.

Most importantly though, know how to use your equipment. Know the different warnings your detector gives, and what it means when it is showing certain signal levels, and how this is changing. Know how to pick out a police car at 1 mile distance, etc.

Secondly, and most importanly, use your eyes. Know when to speed. Know when not to speed. Slowing to 5mph above the limit when going around a blind curve or hill where there could be a speed trap won't kill you. As soon as you are clear, speak back up. No amount of counter measure other than slowing is going to save you in a situation like this. On a 2 lane road, the best indicator is if you have a solid line, and nobody in front of you, slow down.

Just a few tips from my resume. Hopefully it can help some of you out.


EDIT:
One more thing. Spend the proper money on a decent detector like an X50, or V1. Beltronics 985 is a little cheaper, but good too. (I have used all of these, and like the escort best for its range). Stay away from whistler, cobra, uniden, anything bought at Radio Shack. You get what you pay for. You might think these are good detectors (I did when I first bought one, when I was a punk teenager), but I didn't realize how much they lack, until I shelled out 500 bucks (Canadian) for a high end one.

Ok a little more advice....

When you do get pulled over for speeding, be polite, don't be angry or argue. If so, you are getting a ticket.

When he asks you if you know how fast your are going, your answer must be "I haven't checked my speed in the last minute. I assumed I was going the speed limit."

Any other answer will get you in trouble. If tell him even you though you were only going 5 over, he can use that against you in court, and you will be conviceted every time. If you tell a delibrite lie, (ie, "I was driving 65") he will know you are not being truthful, and you will for sure get the ticket. If you answer like I recommend above and be plite and respectful, more times than not, you will be let off with a warning.

Being polite and contrite really helps. I just got a ticket reduced from 30 (km) over to 10 over. 10 over counts the same as a parking ticket - no demerit points and no record. 30 over would get me a record, probably increase my insurance, and I would lose demerit points.

I was coming off a four lane highway, and entered a transition zone, where the speed dipped to 50 km. from 80 km. I was doing 80 km. when I was pulled over. I apologized, explained that I was coming off a four lane road (100 limit), and believed I was going the posted limit (which I honestly did believe). He checked my record on his computer, and found that I was honest when I told him I had not had a speeding ticket for years.

The officer liked my car, liked my attitude, but explained he had to write me a ticket, but would write it for 10 over instead of 30. Then, he further told me that if I chose not to pay the fine, I could go to court, as he said he 'forgot' to sign the ticket - which he did not do, making the ticket invalid if I choose to fight it. I shook his hand, and drove off. He and his partner admired the car as I did so.

The fine was $40.00 instead of $300.00. I'll probably send a cheque in for the amount, simply because he was a nice guy, and treated me with respect as I had treated him. A $40.00 payment will make me think next time, and I was impressed with how he dealt with me. Another car that was pulled over did not get the same treatment.
