I have had my 05 Stang since October, exactly 1000 miles on her. I was just accepted to Univ of California at Santa Barbara to get my PhD in Chemistry. I thought I had things figured out, but the cost of living there is way too much for me to keep my car. Any advice on how to get the most I can back? MSRP was near 29,000...I think I have every upgrade option.

Talk to Stangnut. He's looking for one right now. I don't think you have exactly what he's looking for, but it's worth the effort. You're definately going to lose some money on it though.

 

Take it with you.

1.) Write a few grant/fellowship proposals. Allocate a generous portion of your budget to salary.

2.) Citi Assist loans. Low interest. Deferred until you finish school (even through candidacy. Will be more than enough to keep up with your payments.

3.) Get a roommate.

4.) Apply for food stamps (no joke). If you're clearing no more than a grand a month that's NOT supported by a federal grant of some sort (NIH, NICHD, etc) you should be all set. Direct remaining stipend payments to your Stang.

Rest assured, these strategies are more than tenable (dare I say, PROVEN?), or so my colleagues inform me

I'm 21 and I go to the Univeristy of California, Irvine. I pay for school and my 05 GT. You'll regret selling your car, I know i would.

 

I am done with my undergraduate degree. This is for my PhD in Organic Chem. It is a greuling program, even more so than medical school. Know anyone that went to med school AND had a job??

I like the loan idea though. My undergraduate degree was paid for by the GI Bill, so I don't have any loans yet, and I am going to UCSB with a full scholarship. I don't have to start paying the loans back until after I am done with the program. After that I should be making plenty of money.

Don't sell it. I sold my 1966 Mustang Fastback when I was 19. Boy, that's one of the few things in my life I regret doing.

 

If you love the car as I do, figure something out! This car I am sure will cost you even more dearly to replace in the future. No matter how hard the subject matter, you're up to it, right? The more you work, the more you'll need to let off steam from time to time! (lord, please keep me from SB on break-time). Anyway, hang tough, you can do it!

 

P.S. If you really can't, then put it for sale in Santa Barbara right now....Retail plus $500.

 

Id drive it out to cali also...bound to get good price out there...

ps: any hope you could get cars to run on water with that chem degree

 

with the cost of living in Santa Barbara your better off dropping out and keeping the car, it will be more fun that way, and besides what do you need a PhD for, I thought the purpose of going to college was so that you can one day get a good job so that you can buy cool cars and crap, you already have the car, you skipped the hard part, congrats. JK, good luck in school, too bad you have to sell the car.

 

Here's another bit of advice- Try looking for places to live outside of town. They are much cheaper than places closer to campus.

I'm getting my Ph. D in Chemistry also, at Iowa State University. I live about fifteen minutes from campus and I can OWN my place for cheaper than students RENT inside town.

 

Geez, yeah!! I was depressed when I read your post last night - do you darndest to try and keep it! There have been too many stories of regret about people selling their cars like this and then years later, kicking themselves for it.

You are driving something really special - first complete redesign of the car in, what, 40 years?.... Not to mention having one obviously in the first 10,000 (or so) EVER produced or so......

I know housing in the UCSB area is very tight. Unless you are lucky enough to find cheap digs very near campus, you will probably need a car anyway. I would probably go the loan route and keep the 'Stang if you can make the numbers work. You will take a hit in depreciation selling your '05 and unless you can do repairs yourself a beater replacement can end up costing you $$ anyway in repairs. Just my $.02.

Fortunately since the car is soooooo popular right now you shouldn't have a hard time selling it, but you definately will lose on the deal. I know where you are coming from. I had the same problem back in 97 but I decided to keep the car. I strugled financially for a few years but since then it has been smooth sailing...or should I say driving

Wow, you are a glutton for punishment. I have my degree in ChemE, but I never cared much for OChem.

 

I like how everyone reminds him he’s going to lose money. Like a guy going for his PHD doesn’t know a buying a car and driving it is not a money marker.

The loan might be a good idea but don’t get in over your head for the car. As much as I love it, it’s not a one of a kind car that is worth going to the poor house for.
