9 Millionth Mustang
What surprises me, unless I am reading this wrong, is that the ONE millionth Mustang rolled off the line in March 1966!!! How is it possible that in the next fourty two years, only eight million more were produced than were in the first two years?!?! That's less than two hundred thousand a year for all trims and styles over 42 years. Doesn't make sense to me unless I'm doing/reading something wrong.
Several years of the 'Stang production was exceedingly high, especially the very early years, heck' in '66, the coupe sold over a million units by itself. First 2 years of the Mustang II were high production. But, some years weren't so good. Some models in '69 had to be carried over into '70 with actual federal agents overseeing the VIN # changeover. Last years of the Fox didn't sell to well either. But the best news is that we still outsell the Camaro everyday of the year!!!
Oh, and Brad, guess we shoulda halted production and held it off one more day, huh? I don't know if anything was even done for that milestone!!

How appropriate that it comes out one day from the official release date.
It took till 1978 to build @4.1 million(@300,000/yr).Heck 1.5 million alone in the first 3yrs.! Since then they've been averaging 161,000/yr..
I bet if the General could've maintained those numbers they probably would have never canned the Camaro!
Congrats Ford. I know I've bought a few of 'em.

1999 was a refresh, but many dealers didn't start getting them until December 1998, so it was a shortened model year. By 2000, all of the pent up demand was satisfied. Then 2001 was basically a carryover year...
1999: 126,067 units were sold.
2000: 218,525 units were sold.
2001: 152,524 units were sold.

Please tell us of another "sporty car" that has averaged 200,000 sales per year from 1968 to 2008. The Mustang has been an incredible success over its 44 years and the Mustang nameplate is the envy (& target) of other auto manufacturers.
To repeat what I said on the other 8m Mustang thread:
Congratulations to Ford, the Mustang, Ford's suppliers and anyone who had anything to do with the Mustang's success over the past 44 years !

9 Millionth Mustang
STORY CITY, Iowa, May 6, 2008 – Iowa farmer Thomas Krumm went to his local Ford dealer to order a Mustang GT convertible and unwittingly ordered a piece of history – his Mustang is the 9 millionth built by Ford Motor Company.
He discovers that today when he picks up his milestone Mustang at Gookin Ford in Story City, Iowa.
Krumm, a farmer from rural Story City, became interested in Mustangs through his daughter, Rachael, a Mustang enthusiast who saved enough money to buy her first Mustang at age 17.
"Having been a Mustang fanatic my entire life, I couldn't be more excited that my dad is receiving the 9 millionth Mustang," said Rachael Krumm, who also is a member of the Iowa National Guard. "I am thrilled that I get to see his Mustang GT and its cool new features before I leave for Iraq."
Mustang is Ford Motor Company's longest-running nameplate. It was introduced on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair.
"Mustang is an icon, and the 9 millionth Mustang is a milestone we're very proud of," said Fritz Wilke, Mustang Brand Manager.
"So many people have contributed to Mustang's proud 44-year heritage possible – from incredible Mustangs owners and enthusiasts to our partners at AAI where Mustangs are built to Ford's Product Development and Ford Division teams," he said.

a milestone for sure...coolest part of the mustang story though was the 1 million sold in the first two years- that kicked off a whole new breed of 'fun' yet still affordable sports cars.
OT- a vendor of ours took me for a ride in his new toy today- a custom BMW750...that car is so hi-tech it's just one neat little doo-dad after another...FLIR, 6 disc dvd changer, heated/massaging/reclining seats(all 4!), power retractable sunscreens, and about a zillion other things...but for $125K I gotta say I'd rather have a fleet of 4 mustang GT's, with KB blowers, some other mods, and gas money for a couple years
