IS 300 Ponies enough?
How many think the GT is underpowered at 300 HP. I keep seeing comparisons saying that Ford should have put more ponies in the stang and such...I just wonder how many of the 350 and up cars are running on REGULAR....That was also a big selling point for me... What do you all think? Especially about running on regular gas. (at 20 Cents per gallon savings no less).
I would have like to seen Ford put a bit more in there and I think they could have done it on regular gas. Maybe 300 at the rear wheels.
I still love the car though, I'll just pick up where Ford left off.
Anyways didn't I read a thread on this site where a tuner claims to have picked up 30 additional horsepower by simply reflashing the PCM? If thats true, then you do that add some good breathing headers, maye some underdrive pulleys, .... I bet I would have that 300 RWHP and a 12 second slip too.

For the GT, 300 is a fine number. If anything, I'm more worried about the potential shortcomings of the live axle than of too few ponies. But in both instances, remember, there will be future models with both more power and IRS, along with other enhancements.
Considering that it's a 40-hp upgrade from the previous model, and considering that the GT represents the lowest rung of the "performance" Mustang levels....
After all, the Mustang GT technically now has no rivals: by what standard then is it underpowered? Certainly not compared to its previous editions, or to other (now-discontinued) pony cars. Meanwhile, the Machs, Bullitts and Bosses should take on the higher performing/higher priced cars floating around, and the Cobra looks to run with the Vette.
Considering its intended status and competition, I'd say 300 hp is beyond adequate. Heck, even 280 would have been a decent upgrade.

Cripes, I have a 1996 M3 and it runs like a scalded cat at 250hp. Really you buy horsies but drive torque. I haven't driven a GT, but spec wise it beats my M3 in power. (The newer M3's are 333).
As someone else pointed out IRS is more an issue (what I'm used to). Also in handling and stopping the M3 outclasses the stock GT. I'm think the SVT will cure that. (I'm more into the IRS and other upgrades -- and the prestige than really thinking that it'll be horsepower limited).
So everything I care about is "other". Give me heated seats option. I want a targa or sunroof. Give me a hatchback (convenience for some loading). I'd love AWD, though I doubt it will ever happen. I'd love an active suspension (ala vette and other cars). And I'd like a good auto-stick (I'm not sure how good the auto is yet). And I want some body mods to make it a little unique. All those are more important day to day things than just more ponies. But ponies are fun.

Although I have not had the pleasure of even sitting in it, I like the entire package AS-IS. I could not ask for more. This car will be capable of getting me into plenty of trouble without any additional horses.

Why, oh WHY would any self-respecting Mustang lover ask for AWD, active suspension, Targa, or AUTO-STICK on a Mustang?!?!?
What are you? Some metrosexual from Connecticut or Vermont who got a BMW when they turned "sweet 16"?!?!?
Go buy yourself another Bimmer. Go spend triple the hours in the garage getting your car repaired because all the digitized crap keeps shorting out and breaking down...
I think it really says something when Cadillac and Lexus trounce Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and VW (which came next to dead-last) in J.D. Powers' Initial Quality assessment...
And your quote about the live axle... I take it you've driven both the BMW M3 AND the 2005 Mustang GT before you drew your conclusion?

Oh, she means the one that costs nearly $10k more than the GT, is a few tenths slower, has a much slower slalom speed, and also looks like a big Sunfire.
RE: 03muzzy6. I'm not smokin anything, that's why I said AWD is what I want, but I don't think it is going to happen. Dodge has AWD and Accura is adding it, and can be a nice handling improvement, especially for us that live in areas that get snow. Unlikely, but it would be nice.
If I wanted to stay with the Bimmer, I would. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't like Ford to take them on and eat the 3 series coupe/vert. There's lots the Mustang does better, but that doesn't mean I can't want more.
