3.5 V6 or 4.0 V6 for 2006?
Expect Ford to do the same trick they did in 94/96. Old engines first and then something newer better with more HP. So that 3.5 with at leat 250 HP will come sooner than you think and the GT will go up in power at the same time.

I wouldn't expect the 3.5L to be in a Mustang at all. That motor is going to be used more for FWD/AWD applications. The 3.5L will make it into the 500, Freestyle, Montego, and most likely the new sedans coming out, the Fusion, Milan, and Zephyr. This is what FoMoCo wants to use to battle the imports who get 250+ hp in their sedans. I hear the working name for the engine is the "Hurricane", so I expect it to really move when it is finally put into the cars. I know it will make the 500, and Freestyle a great vehicle. Plus I hear it will run off of regular 87 octane
, which means cheaper at the pumps.
While I don't think we will see the 3.5L in the Mustang anytime soon, it is pretty much a given that it will show up in a rwd car before too long. Assuming that Ford continues to build rwd cars other than the Mustang and Panther platform cars, which I believe they will.
Virtually every other six-cylinder is scheduled to be phased out to my knowledge. This includes the inline-six the Aussie Falcon currently utilizes if I recall. Without doubt if Ford does that the 3.5L is the only logical replacement.

you did't say that
And besides, prior to 2005 Ford had never used the 4.0 in the Mustang. In fact the 4.0 is an upgrade to the old 3.8 pushrod V6 that the Mustang had used for years.
Again, as I and others have said, don't expect the 3.5L in the Mustang anytime soon. The 3.5L does not start production until Dec 2005. Cologne is working on improved versions of the 4.0L V6 for future Mustangs. Expect to see an upgraded 4.0 V6 in the 2007 MY Mustang.
The3.8 is the Essex engine, bumped to3.9 in o4 and then to 4.2 for Freestars and Monterreys. The 4.0 in the 05 stangs is a version of the engine used in the Explorer,Mountaineerand Ranger. The new3.5 when it arrives is a larger version of the 3.0 Duratec engines and will most likely be used as an upgrade in all the new frontwheel and all wheel drives the automotive press is criticizing for a lack of power. The Mustang will probably be one of the last products to see this engine until the other lines have it .
I spoke with an engineer at Cleveland engine plant last week and no version of the 3.5L V6 family is slated for installation in the Mustang in the near future (read 5 years+)
V10 is entirely correct in his statement that Cologne will continue to improve the 4.0L V6 for us in the Mustang.

I agree the 3.5 Duratec will not be in the Mustang for several years.
It may never be available in the Mustang as by the time Ford phases out the Cologne V6 the Duratec 35 could be replaced with something else.
The big problem with the future is that it's really hard to predict.

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Barra 182 inline-6 is the best 6-cylinder engine Ford of Anywhere makes! In its native form, that stinker puts out 285 lb/ft of torque!
It's all-aluminum. It sports a 4-valve DOHC valvetrain with variable valve timing! It is the six-cylinder engine that should BY ALL RIGHTS be in a Mustang!!!!!
I think I'm going to cry now...
