05-24-6 CONVERTIBLE SYSTEM CONCERNS
Publication Date: November 29, 2005
FORD: 2005-2006 Mustang
ISSUE:
Some 2005/2006 Mustang Convertible vehicles may require a repair of the convertible top. Individual components should continue to be used where appropriate, but if required a new top assembly is now available.
ACTION:
Evaluate the convertible top concern and perform a cost effective repair. A complete assembly is not necessary for most repairs and should only be used when the top frame has caused consequential damage to the top cover.
Verify the convertible top components that require replacement, and order the lowest level of components to repair the top. The following is a summary of the convertible top system concerns and the appropriate service action to correct the issue. For complete system diagnosis and repair information, refer to the Mustang Workshop Manual, Section 501-18.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Verify the components that are defective and replace individual components where necessary
Replace Top Cover:
Top cover has a defect that can not be repaired.
Rear window glass is separated from the top material.
NOTE: STAINS, MILDEW, AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE NOT WARRANTABLE.
Replace Side Rails:
Top lifts unevenly side-to-side with no hydraulic system issues. (Figure 1)
Figure 1 - Article 05-24-6
Top latch dowel pins do not align with header latch bracket. (Figure 2)
Figure 2 - Article 05-24-6
Top #1 bow clearance to top well in the body is uneven. (Figure 3)
Figure 3 - Article 05-24-6
Side window seals do not align properly to side glass. (Figure 4)
Figure 4 - Article 05-24-6
Replace Top Assembly:
Side rail linkage broken. (Figures 5 and 6)
Figure 5 - Article 05-24-6
Figure 6 - Article 05-24-6

Thanks Guys,
I knew I could count on the members more than on the Ford Dealer.
The service writer told me there were no current issues with my car.
Except for the gas tank issue, I had to tell him that one..

Well apparently the '05 TSBs DO NOT apply to the '06 Mustangs.
I have the '05 transmission TSB and Ford won't fix it because they don't have an '06 TSB... total BS.

Keep in mind that the TSB's don't apply or not apply. They are bulletins post by Ford as direction for the tech's to help repair problems that have become "common" on a particular car. These aren't recalls. If you car is having a problem all the TSB does is direct the tech's toward a fix. Ford won't pay to perform a fix if your car isn't currently displaying the concern.

Well that's the point, my car IS displaying the concern.
It's got the EXACT same problems with the transmission as the '05 TSB directs (whines in second and third gear).
But when I took it in the tech said that the transmission was completely different for the '06 (total bs) and that they couldn't fix it because as far as Ford was concerned it was normal.
So whether or not they apply, I don't know, but dealers are using them as an excuse I guess to not work on the car.
Either way it's going to cost Ford more to not fix my car now than to fix it because the longer I drive it the louder it gets so I'm sure I'll be needing a whole new transmission very soon.
And people wonder why Ford is in financial difficulty... "hmm should we fix it now before it really becomes a problem or wait until we have to replace the whole transmission... nope lets wait so it will cost us A LOT more."

Ok gang. My 2005 vert just had both tension rods break on the vert top. Known issue from TSB 05-24-06. One had the shoulder joint break off complete. The other has it "pulled' open. Clearly stress fractures. I would just take them to get welded and reinforced and eat the $50 and time to fix this myself but on one side the vert framing actually bent - a lot - toward the front of the car. I could bend it back but with the black paint already flaking off - it's clearly weakened.
Question is simple. My 72 months 60,000 mile warranty expired just back on April 13th, 2011. The car only has 35,000 miles on it. It's a show car. I drive it only on weekends.
Does a TSB replacement only occur when the warranty is still in effect? Will a Ford dealer give any leeway on that? We're talking almost 90 days. I barely put 150 miles on it in that time. The stress fractures had to have built up over years.

My name is Deysha with Ford Customer Service. You are correct; TSB’s are only covered when your vehicle is under warranty. However, the dealer may still perform the repairs needed on your vehicle at customer cost. Please, speak to the Service Manager at your Ford dealer to see how they can help. I hope this helps and you can continue to enjoy your show car.
