Funny enough the pinto was supposed to be released with anti-lock brakes, front air-bags, and a fuel-cell bladder in the gas tand. Ford chopped these items at the last minute in another show of their wisdom at launching automobles. 200 bucks more a car and the pinto would of been "revolutionary" in automotive history. Pretty slick move up in Dearborn..... :crazy:

I'm not an automotive engineer but from what I have seen of the Mustang's design this should be a very safe vehicle. All reports have said it can hang with an M3 on the road course. It's based on a five star frame design, I have a feeling this is no longer the "cheap" car it once was. I believe it will be affordable and more refined than any Mustang thus far. I feel this car is going to be a really really really really good car. I'm so stoked I can't wait to get my hands on this beast.

I can't speak to the overall design of the fuel system, but I can say that at least some of the safety features for the tank are being taken very seriously. The company I work for manufactures some of these components and the tolerance criteria is very, very tight. This car also has a system which we manufacture parts for that isolates the fuel system in a roll over. I have said this before.....We manufacture for Chrysler, GM, Hyundai, and more.
This mustang project has been one of the most difficult because of Fords insistence on quality.

AFAIK Volvo has worked with the Mustang engineers to make the car as safe as possible. Volvo makes very safe cars, for example the XC90 and S40 have earned five stars in the Euro NCAP Crash Test. But I honestly think there's no way it competes with the M3 on the road course. It's a great car, but not an M3.
