I have a 2005 Mustang that will idle ok but the gas fumes will burn your eyes. Then whenever you drive it and push in on the clutch the rpms will shoot up to 5000 for no reason. Has anyone had this issue or know what it may be. We have tried everything we can think of with no luck. Thanks!

Is the engine/drivetrain modded or custom tuned? Even if it isn't, something somewhere is very wrong. If it is running super rich, it may be destroying your catalytic converters, if they are not already goners.

^^^ Yikes!! Yeah, get that car to your favorite mechanic fast. Gas is not something you want to smell to the extreme you are talking about.

If your vehicle has been modified with an e-mail or custom tune? I would start by contacting your tuning vendor, as the air/fuel parameters are way too rich and need to be adjusted... Also, are you running the stock exhaust or running off-road without the catalytic converters? Unless you provide us with the information requested? we won't be able to provide the troubleshooting steps your requesting in order to help resolve your issue

First thank you for your feedback! No there isn't a tune or a programmer in the car. It does have an aftermarket exhaust though.

What type of aftermarket exhaust, just axle-back mufflers or did you also replace/remove the stock catalytic converters?

yep, if the cats have been deleted, that would at least partly explain the gas smell ... and that would usually require a tune modification to get rid of the CEL on the dash due to the missing rear O2 sensors

Yep, the OP also hasn't mentioned as to whether the cats have been deleted altogether or replaced with high-flow cats which require turning off the rear 02 sensors in order to prevent a CEL on the dash... However, due to the enforcement of the clean air act regulations, aftermarket tuning vendors can no longer disable any portion of the OEM catalyst equipment devices without risking serious fines for violation or possibly having their businesses shut down altogether...

All the major tuning vendors include in their disclaimers they will no longer offer calibration tunes which require disabling any portion of the OEM catalyst equipment system!
