I am also in your situation, and though I don't own one yet, I do have some sugestions. If you are going to be getting a V6, you probably won't have to order one to find one like you want, though it might be a bit tougher since you want a manual. If you check dealerships around you, especially larger ones, you should be able to find a nice inventory of V6s on the lots. If you want to save some money, I would wait until the end of the model year before buying. By then, they will be trying to get rid of all the unsold cars, and will probably be offering some good incentives on the V6s.

Just a question, are you going to be getting rid of your 5.0? If so, I am sure you will miss the extra horsepower, light weight, and exhaust tone of it compared to the new V6. The great styling and the fact that it is a new car should make up for that. Plus, I've heard that with a few simple bolt ons like a less restrictive exaust, CAI, and a computer reflash that this car can easily make 240-250 HP. Also, the improved suspension over the Fox platform means if you slap a rear sway bar and some wider tires on it that you will have a very nice handling car, due in part to the improved weight ratio of the V6.

Buying a V-6 is going to cost you something in the low 20's. The GT would likely cost, on average, between 5k and 7k more. Though the 210hp produced by the V-6 is pretty cool, if you've got that need for speed then it may not be enough. I test drove both before making my decision and, though I chose to buy a V-6, the V-8 was a memorable ride.

What you get with the V-6 is not insignificant either. At 210hp it is nearly the equal to older V-8's. The ride is smooth and comfortable... and it still turns heads.

i just want the deluxe base V6 really...for cryin out loud stock 5.0s dyno out to as much HP as the new V6 lol so not much difference there...only thing that bugs me is missing the exhaust note obviously...but i think i can live w\that for a while lol, as for the other stuff, i just want it w\this stuff:
Windveil blue
dark charcoal cloth
active theft alarm (yes i have read about the hacking of the alarms )
5spd manual
thats it really...i believe the spoiler comes with it or do i HAVE to get the stupid appearance upgrade? because i love the spoiler on it and dont want the vinyl that says "mustang" on the rocker panels. and about buying one, im kinda waiting until about march or april because i may have a buyer for my 5.0 around then so i can then get the 05 stang...id also like to order mine instead, i dont want to get 1 w\a bunch of dealer crap thrown on it anyways..but like i said, i just want everything base except for the things i listed, ESPECIALLY the headunit...im going to replace that anyways since the shaker 500/1000s stink and are FAR too much $$$ for what they are...for cryin out loud i could spend 1100$ and have a MUCH better system than the shaker 1000 lol

ps - there are a couple of dealers around my area (hayward ford and seramonte ford) where they offered a few V6's for 17k (my x-plan price i believe from green valley ford was about 18k, i dont like them but theyre the closest to me in town), i dont know their options, but im going to call to find out later out of curiosity even tho id prefer to order mine and be different from just having one that sat on the lot

Unless you absolutely need an '05, why not look into getting an '03 or '04 Mach 1, you can get a pretty good deal on those, your insurance will be higher, that's the only thing wrong with that scenario.

Yes that's true, but it is just vinyl, you can take it off.

I looked at a couple of V-6's in the 17k range and they were pretty sparsely configured... basic radio, manual tranny, no alarm, no traction control/ABS. Personally I could deal with having a basic radio and installing an alarm aftermarket but traction control/ABS wasn't an option. I think simply adding the spoiler alone costs about $300 to do through the dealer.

I will be ordering my V6 Stang sometime around August so it will probably be an 06. But I've looked at the lots around town and done the search online and no one within 100 miles has the colors and options I want.

But I did think about getting a Bullitt or Mach 1 instead of the 05/06 Mustang. But after really thinking about it hard I too wanted a brand-new car. I've had two used cars and both ended being lemons (an Eclipse with a horrible tranny, and a Civic with numerous front end issues). It's time to by a new car and I've always wanted a Stang. But like you I can't afford the V8 without forcing myself into a crap apartment with worse then beer-can budget for the next 4 years of my life. I finish my bachelor program in about two years and the combo of car payments and student loan payments will kill me.

I can get the V6 paid off before my student loan payments being and if you have anything on your driving record the V6 is significantly cheaper then the V8 in the insurance department (or at least this is true with State Farm).

Edit: I won't be getting the spoiler & mustang striping when I order. I want a Ducktail spoiler for the Mustang and it appears most don't fit the bolt patterns for the stock spoiler.

You are going to crave for more after you get a V6. You're going to lust after dual exhaust and 300hp. You'll want more torque, then you'll want stuff like leather and other premium options. I say either get another car, like a hyundai tiburon, or just save up (or take the plunge if you can). I don't think the base V6 is worth the money compared to the more complete cars you can get with other brands. I think you would even have more fun with a spectra SE-R or VW GTi.

I'm a college kid too, but I bought the GT w/ IUP and red leather. I love my car, but at my age I don't think I could love it with cloth seats, no IUP and a weaker engine.

I would say go around and do some serious shopping and test driving. You might even be able to get last year's Acura RSX depending on the deals floating around.

My wife and I just drove a V6 with 5-speed manual this weekend. It was a V6 deluxe with a sticker of $19,410.

For the budget-minded, it is THE sleeper Mustang. It was a blast to drive, and had no trouble at all getting out of it's own way.

If I could not afford the GT, I would be very happy with the V6/manual combo. Terrific bang for the buck.

IMO if you aren't goint to get the V6 Mustang just keep the 88 Mustang. There is no point in going out and getting a brand-new car that you won't be happy with. The Tiburon is the same price as the V6 Mustang w/X-Plan pricing (that is loaded).

Also, not everyone wants 300hp with dual exhaust belching all the way. I personally have no issue with the "wimpy" 210 horsies and single pipe. But insurance is less (gas isn't any different) and at least from my perspective I'll be getting a 115hp increase from any car I've ever driven before (Eclipse & Civic are both sub-100). It really does annoy me how so many people on this (and any Mustang board) think that if you aren't gettin the concrete scorching GT your either inadequate or not going to be happy.

Maybe it was just me, but from his original post, he wants the GT, but just can't afford it, I could be wrong though.

well now im debating again about the GT, because i found a dealer that is willing to get me an 05 GT under x-plan...and it was $23k for it...that was w\the active theft alarm, im trying to weigh the option to see if its worth it to get the active theft or get an aftermarket...the active theft is only $225....just gotta weigh the options now...and think out financing....he said anywhere from 3.9-7.9% he could offer me all depending on my credit and such...just gotta talk more w\the guy, seems like he's pretty cool and down to earth unlike alot of dealers

The Active alarm system is alright, but aftermarket systems like Lojack blow it out of the water, forego the active alarm and go aftermarket. And good job finding xplan pricing on a Mustang GT.

Just call it short man syndrom. I re-read his original, due apologizes for the V6 rant.

I will stand by the "Don't get a new car until you can afford what you want" comment.
