07 Mustang takes 97 Corvette
07 Mustang takes 97 Corvette
This was my first real test with my Mustang. I do not street race. I am very careful on the road. My boss has a stock 97 vette. For almost a year now he has been saying how the Corvette was much faster than the Mustang. True, year for year. Nothing new. He kept stating the 0 to 60 times etc, etc...How his car would smoke me, etc, etc...
Well, I was at a stop light Friday morning on my way to work. Far left lane no one around me. The light turned green and I slowly shift from first to second and then third. I was driving slowly since I had only 24 km to empty. I was going to fill up after work.
After I shifted into third I noticed something in my rear view mirror. I seen a silver car. Too far to see what it was. I looked in front of me and then back into my rear view mirror. This time I could see it was the silver 97 vette. He was changing lanes from behind me to the right lane when I notice him. I immediately floored it. The conditions were right. No other vehicles on the road which is a first on this road. My RPMS were around 2500+ when I floored it, not sure since I was driving slowly to save on gas...The road is straight for about 3+ blocks then a swerve to the left and then a sharper swerve to the right. After that 2 blocks and a left at the lights and we are at work...
He passed me on my right side and was ahead by about one and a half car lengths. Then I started to accelerate on him and in no time I was one and a half car lengths ahead of him. I kept accelerating and shifted into 4th and continued accelerating on him. I was about 5 to 7 car lengths ahead of him when the first swerve approached...I hit the brakes and looked at my speed. To my surprise I was going 160 km/hr...I slowed a little and made the first swerve and then the second sharp swerve to the right approached...My head hit the side window when I turned to the right to keep in my lane...I was in my lane at all times.
I was very impressed with the handling of this Mustang. No problems around the steep corners and aggressive acceleration...I think Doug had some say into this. The CAI and 93 Race tune really worked its magic...I am very impressed with this set up...After the dust settled and I pulled into work I just realized what had happen...I never had my Mustang at that speed before and never took a sharp corner like that at that speed...Needless to say; I am lucky I never wiped out around those corners...As well as, speeding tickets etc, from the police.
When I seen the boss I told him about sneaking up on me like that...He mentioned he had his traction control on meaning it is like a turbo for him with it off...I mentioned I too had my traction control on. He never said anything again about this...To be honest, it was a little awkward to see him after that. His vette was no competition at all for this Mustang. I feel good about that. Not even close. I understand he has 350 hp or something. So almost evenly matched up...But, wow, did I pull on him hard. I would like to see a standing start between us...
Just thought I would pass this on. I repeat. I do not street race. The conditions were right and I took the challenge after almost a year of hearing him yapping about how fast the vetts are compared the Mustang...Drive safe, Joseph...

Thanks everyone for your thoughts...We all know the Corvette is in another league. Yes, his car was 10 years old but, it feels good to finally get this over with. Almost one year of his constant yapping...I did not expect to win, just stay close...I am very happy with the results...
Now back to normal driving...Take care all, Joseph...

Yeah I noticed they couldn't pull away from me when they try.
I seem to be able to close any gap quickly on the highway.
I kinda look for older Vettes with younger (not original) drivers to play with.
I don't think I am going to race my new boss.
He has a 2002 Roush stage 2 and I am pretty sure I can blow him away.
Not always a good thing.

I'm sure you can. Stage 2's are only suspension upgrades along with body upgrades. Nothing else is touched unless he did it himself. Really, reading your sig, I would think you would DEFINATELY eat his roush for lunch...so yeah....prolly better to just stay away and not tempt him to be embarrased.
Andretti
I would think at the track this would be a close race. I am going to assume that your boss does not properly understand his car (i.e. where to shift/where the power band is at on the street).
Joe,
All I remember is that I didn't have any problems out running a new '05 Stang a couple of years ago with my '01 Vette...maybe your 3.55 rear helps a bit...
I love both of my babies...(my Vette is a 6 spd, 350HP, with the Z51 suspension package)
