Got an 06 V6 with manual trans. Have 3600 miles on the clock. Here are two issues. Any advice welcome.

First, when in neutral with clutch out, the thing makes lots of noise..kind of rattles. Throw out bearing????

Second: Always tough to shift into second without some grind. Clutch adjustment???

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave,
Yes, it sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging. Better drop it off at the dealership to get them to replace it. Isn't a 3-year warrantee a good thing?
Good luck, Brian.

Let us know what the dealership says if you do go, as I have a similar problem

OK..I am dropping the stang off today. The clutch disengagement does seem like the issue. Hoping it is just an adjustment.

Will let you guys know.

OK guys. Here is the diagnosis from Ford.

First, the service guy said you don't adjust hydraulic clutches.

They had their manual tranny expert take it for a drive. He said the clunky detent is normal for the Tremec trans. There is no actual gear grinding. However, if I try to shift fast, it is still too hard for my preferences.

When I go in for the 5000 miler in a few weeks, I will have a different Ford dealer check it out. The dealer here in Alexandria, VA didn't impress me anyway.

It seems a lot of people have gotten the same response you have, indicating that maybe it really is 'just the way they are.' If that is truly the case, I'll probably be going with an Aftermarket shifter like Steeda's to try and smooth it out

Had the exact same replly from my dealer, and they really tend to avoid giving me a straight answer. In my case they say that they spoke to the Ford district manager and it's normal noise. They say that all american rear drive cars have the same kind of noise because of the transmission placement. (to me that's BS).

Not sure that changing the shifter will do much, I was more hoping that they would insulate the top of the transmission to reduce noise emission, rather than noise production.

I'm even more happy now of having purchased the 7 years extended warranty !!!

I gotta say my transmission is VERY noisy compared to my '91 GT.

I actually think I got used to it until the other day when I drove my old car to work. Man I'm telling you it sounded as quiet as a church in my old car! And you would think it would be the other way around.

I don't know if I should take it in or not. I mean it shifts fine, and runs fine, it's just noisy as heck.

It kind of sounds like little rocks rolling around in my transmission or something.

I hate to say this, but manual transmissions are noisier than automatics in general, especially in Mustangs, and this is one of the reasons I don't drive one. I had a t5 trans in an 84 Mustang and the trans made a lot of noise in neutral with and between shifts. If Honda made a manual trans for the Mustang, then it would likely be quiet and shift better. If you want to hear noise, just listen to an old Muncie M22.

I have a noice while in 4th gear only.

Will have it check next spring.

Only other thing I can figure it that the tranny/shifter is higher up/closer to us.
My Escort shifter is almost on the floor and I have no noise from it at all. There is a big difference in the placement/height of the shifter from my Escort to the Mustang. Could this what we are hearing? the fact that the tranny is closer to our ears so to say.

I have a manual and cannot say that it sounds excessively noisy or is had to shift (except occasionally into Reverse). I will listen more carefully tonight when I go for a drive.

It's slightly noisy with the clutch engaged (out) in neutral because the speed/idler gears are spinning freely inside the tranny since they are in constant mesh with the counter shaft cluster gears. As soon as the clutch is disengaged power flow is not entering the input shaft, so the counter shaft doesn't spin the speed gears (noise is gone).
It shouldn't be too loud at all to cause any trouble as they are helical cut gears (should have relativaly quiet operation), except for reverse on the V6.

Generally a misaligned clutch on cars will cause hard shifting, but the slight grind is coming from the transmission. A worn blocker ring can cause the sleeve to slide against the clutching teeth on the speed gear for that second while making the shift.

I would demand repairs for that shift to second. The heavy line guy should have a new 2nd gear synchro set installed in no time.
Good luck

There is a thread around here about the trans being harder to shift when you are trying to shift quickly. Someone even called up the transmission company (Tremec, I believe) and talked to an engineer. They said that it is how its supposed to be, and they don't really like it, but Ford insists on using this transmission.
