05s are great, but anyone still really like 04s?

Sounds like you don't have much experience with classic Mustangs. If you like the '04s then go with them. You can save tons of cash this way. Personally I would not be writing this, much less being here, if '05s were from the same generation as the '04s. IMHO since 1974 all the Mustangs were rebadged Mavericks, Granadas and Probes. Again, nothing wrong with any of this if you never lived through the golden age of the classics.

I thought the question was about appearance, not performance.

What happens when that 04 you pull up to is a Cobra? :flame2:
Well...... at least you have the new body style!

Well the Cobra interior is just a brushed up version of all the other SN95 models, which to me has a Probish look.

Opinions are like ... well, you know . Buy what you want. I can't fault anyone for wanting an 03/04 Cobra -- I've thought about it myself. The new body style is cool, but the drivetrain is ho-hum if you're a go-pedal junkie. Choosing between the 05 GT and an 04 Cobra is a hard choice, since they both have things to recommend them.
I cancelled my 2005 GT order, I'm going to wait a couple of years for a SE or Cobra, I want the body AND the drivetrain to go with it. In the meantime I'll just have to have some more fun with my 5.0.

I just got done test driving a pony package torch red V6 04, and I have to say that it was pretty darn nice. I know the 05s will be a bigger engine, and thats what I really like, but anyone think that the 04 is just as cool as the 05? I suppose its hard to tell since I havent seen the 05 yet.

But if it was me, I would not do anything until you see an '05 and sit in it. As many people have said, it looks even better in person. The 05 is a MUCH better car. It will ride, handle & accelerate MUCH better than an 05. It is also a far more refined car, less noise, vibration & harshness. And you will be getting a brand new model that will have essentially the same body style for at least 5 years, so an 05 will still look current 5 years from now.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Here's mine: I don't like any of the Mustangs from 94-04, except for a few Cobras and Machs I've seen.
My roommate has an 00 Vert, and while it is a cool car, I really don't like the styling, inside or out.
Up until I went to the auto show last year, I was planning on getting a 68-70 Stang, but when I saw the 05 body style, I about wet myself, and decided shortly after that I would wind up getting one.
Maybe someday in the future I will get my 69 Boss, but for now, I'm going to be very happy with the 05. I'm not the least bit interested in the SN95s, although I had a friend who had a 99 Mystichrome Cobra, and that car looked pretty sweet!

There were actually 3 mystics
96 -> Mystic Cobra (Purple, blue, green, bronze)
00 -> Mystic Gold (Gold -> Green) Never happened 00's were cancelled, and something about the paint process not being perfected.
04 -> Mystichrome (Black -> teal)

Yeah, sorry, apparently the word I was looking for was "mystic" not mystichrome.
Anyway, I don't like the interior of the SN95s, or the general look of the body lines, but I've seen a few with some tasteful mods which looked pretty good. I'd still take a stock 05 over any of them though.
BTW, is the shifter on the SN95 Cobras any shorter throw than the GTs? The GT seemed to have way too long of a throw to me, but then again I was comparing it to my Fox body which had a shortened shifter.
Also, how do you guys think the 05 GT 5 speed tranny will compare to the Cobra's 6 speed? I don't really care about the engine differences between the two since I'm planning on supercharging my GT, but I wonder if the tranny will act much differently?

The 05 GT 5-speed tranny is identical to the 04 GT 5-speed tranny -- it's a Tremec 3650.

I wouldn't say its identicle.
Same tranny, updated ..and and cable connected to the tranny...
Apparently has none of the 'issues' that the previous T3650 has, shorter throw, and connected via cable to the tranny itself.

The SN95, while doing yeoman's duty in carrying the Mustang name, is soooooo overdue, by about a decade, for replacement, that I am glad to it fade off to stage left. While the SN95s do have strong motors and are pretty capable in a straight line on butter-smooth roads, their archaic chassis design trips them up pretty badly on anything other than the straight and narrow. And enough has already been said about the less than stellar ergonomics, fit, finish and materials on this old gray mare.
Bring on the new stallion.
