When you change the timing around you will need to compensate with a higher octane. If you don't it will cause detonation, which can destroy an engine fairly quick.
Normally a tune changes the fuel, timing, and possibly more. However, I have heard that the timing is mainly changed up top and as long as you don't go WOT and really get on it you can run a lower octane.
