If I'm not mistaken, doesn't ford use a synthetic blend in the 03 anyway.

Ford developed their motors around the 5-20 syn blend, guessing about the new oil requirements. I dont think their guesswork and the requirements jive to well I cant find a 5-20 syn blend in anything but ford oil. I figure they desighned the motor around that particular grade, best to use it.

As much as I like Mobil 1, I have a lot of faith in Ford's mechanical engineers. If Ford offers a synthetic blend, I might just use that.

100% correct. Filter is very, very important. I say stick with a Motorcraft filter. I've tried many filters and the stock filter works very well.

I'd say let your factory oil go to a good 3000 before changing if you plan to go with Royal Purple or Mobil 1 because those oils reduce friction so much that they don't allow your piston rings to seat properly during break in, or so I'm told.

Why?
the filter media in the fram resricts the oil flow.
