Several months ago I bought a fairly modified 1999 mustang convt. I called the guy who owned it before and he told me he put a 2002 Cobra transmission in it. Is there a way for me to determine exactly what transmission is in the car? The reason I'm asking is I'm hearing a lot of noise when I downshift going into 1st or 2nd and I would like to get it fixed. The trans makes a growling or gargling noise when it happens. It only happens when downshifting, but not all of the time. When it does I immediately take it out of gear. Could it be the syncros?

PS. If anyone knows of a good transmisson shop in B'ham, AL area please let me know.

Thanks!

Well first of all, i dont believe that Ford produced any american cobras in 2002, so im not sure what transmission is actually in your car. it is probably a tremic, so i would crawl under your car, look at the ID plate on it, write any identifying numbers/codes you find on it, and then contact tremic for help.

as for your trans shop request, i cant help you, but there are plenty of guys on these boards who live in your area, so try contacting some of them, like Scott (scothew) or Brad (themustangsource) and ask them to recommend a shop. good luck.

Definetly not a 2002 cobra tranny since none were built. Most likely if you are feeling a rough shift between 1st and 2nd and the word cobra was used in conjunction with the tranny around that time its a Tremec 3650. Do some reading on this forum and the others. You'll find this a VERY common problem for the Tremec 3650, however you may find the shift gets better when the tranny warms up. I do. I have a 2001 Cobra with this exact problem. What helped some was draining the fluid and slightly underfilling with Royal Purple synthetic. 3.2 quarts I believe was the amount I added. This didn't completely eliminate the problem but it did help. I've heard this was what Tremec reco'd to do and it shouldn't hurt the life of the tranny with normal use.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the help. I'll probably take it to a local shop and have the trans oil replaced and see what happens.
