Traction Control / Limited Slip Question

I have a friend with an 03 GT convertible. (I have an 05 and I don't know much about the SN95s)

He seems to think he should have a limited slip rear end. He says that with traction control off, he can spin the right rear when he power brakes it.

With traction control on, it will just bog down and not spin at all.

I thought that sounds right with an open rear end. Does this make sense, and was limited slip an option for the SN 95 GTs?

It sounds like an open diff unless the clutches are worn out. Not sure about standard or not equipment for this car. I`m sure a code on the door tag would give this info.

Limited slip or T-lok as Ford calls it, is standard. His clutches are spent. He needs this:

Good - thanks. Ok, so the GT's all came with T-Lok. And if his is not functioning properly, then it sounds like maybe the previous owner may have damaged it.

That is correct, they all came with T lock. Although, you should just have him buy an 03-04 cobra dif, 31 spline axles, and gears since it will all be apart.

All V8 Mustangs built since 1985 have a Traction-Lok differential.

Gotcha -

I talked to my friend and I am not so sure he understands how the traction control works, so that may be part of the problem...

traction control works by the computer using the ABS sensors on the rear wheels to compare the speed difference of the wheels and the transmission if it says the tires are spinning it pulls timing from the engine to stop or prevent wheel spin

Ah - I see... I suppose I never thought much about how the TC system works (I always have mine turned off). I figured that it would apply part of the ABS to the wheel that was spinning. But it is actually modulating the engine (power) output.

Thanks-

By the way - I like your stripes...

agreed. if you think about it the 4.0 V6 in the current stang is more powerful then the V8 in the 1985 car yet it doesn't have t-lok and the 85 does. lol.

Thank goodness the aftermarket sells traction-lok carriers and ring/pinion gears for the 7.5" rearend that is in the V6 Mustangs. Or, buy an 8.8" assembly to bolt right into a V6 car from a GT.

Yes, but at the factory it`s pocket change to have it installed, rather than the $700 I spent after the fact.
Come on Ford "WAKE UP"
