Timing?

What are the odds that my timing could be off?

I've been battling a bit of a startup issue for a month or so, I think the main cause is a fuel pump going bad.

However, on several occasions lately, the car has tried to start up, then dies, they will extremely loudly backfire out of the exhaust pipe. Could this be a symptom of timing being off?

Yes it can be timing I'm not a genius about it too much but i kno it is either advanced or retarded depending on if it backfires out exhaust or not but it could be other things as well. I'm sure a more experienced person will chime in but hopefully you get it right. bad plugs can cause hard starting and possibly backfire. Just keep checkin around thru trial n error and u will get it.

And if it starts n dies is the idle up before it dies cause if it idles normal and just dies it prob involving your fuel pump situation. If it was timing it would be hard to start but should idle
