Exclamation Speedo, Tac, and Temp Gauge Quit

Hey guys, I need some help troubleshooting a problem. 2000 GT with 85k on it.

Driving in to work today, my speedo and tac started dancing up and down and finally quit with both at zero. Funny thing is that the temp gauge quit working too. (odometer displays --------- as well). The fuel, oil, and battery gauges work. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet, but I did shut the car off and restart it, but no change.

Any ideas????
Fuse?
Speedo gear?
Cluster gone bad?

I appreciate any help you may have.

I would suspect a loose or broken wire since the gauges "danced" for a while. Look at the wiring diagram for something they have in common and start there.

I had the same problem with my 03 GT, right before the battery died. Have it tested that could be your problem.

Fuses and wires. Any squeaks lately? Leaning towards wires.

Well, still no luck. I checked all my fuses, none blown.
I pulled the gauge cluster and could find any loose connections or wires. Pulled the ECU, no loose or exposed wires there either, but I did find out that the previous owner has some sort of chip installed as the ECU attaching bracket is missing and the plug on top was replaced by Duct tape.

Anyway I connected the battery up this morning after being disconnected for two days. Started it up and the gauges worked fine...for about five minutes then they danced a bit again and quit followed by the service engine soon lamp. Sounds like I reset the ECU when the battery was disconnected, but the fault came back shortly after reconnection.

Anybody have any idea what would cause this?? Speedo gear is mechanical so if it had failed it wouldn't ever work again. Instrument cluster appears to be working. Is there a Speed sensor or module???

Do you have a code reader? Maybe you need to reset. Have you tried reflash from dealer?

Exclamation Important battery info. from redhorse!

Bringing this back up!!!!!!!

I owe a special thanks and an apology to redhorse. I blew his post off. Turns out about two weeks ago my battery went out. I replaced it and since then my gauges have been working fine (knock on wood).

Anyway I thought this would be important information to all 99-04 GT owners (maybe V6 as well). If your gauges quit working or dance around, it may be nothing more then your battery going bad. I am not sure why or how this causes the phenomena, but the countermearsure was simple. I wish I had given redhorse some heed. It would have saved me a lot of time and worry.

Thank you Redhorse

Looking back over all the posts I guess it makes sense, especially after working fine with disconnection. Maybe not enough amps or something?
