[FONT=Arial][SIZE=1]First time poster so sorry in advance if I screw it up. After 20+ years and my first retirement, finally got the car I've always wanted. Just bought an 04 GT, 5-spd manual...it's beautiful and all I thought a Mustang would be. Got a question on a transmission noise that happens occasionally when upshifting from 1st to 2nd. Sometimes get a pretty loud "ker-klunk" as I'm letting up on the accelerator and am pushing in the clutch while shifting from 1st to 2nd...(also if I suddenly let up on the gas pedal while accelerating in second gear). I'm shifting smoothly, so can't figure out if it's me or just a normal transmission noise. I've driven alot of manual transmissions over 26 years, but haven't heard that before (definitely is not the grinding noise from a missed shift!). Doesn't sound healthy and don't want to dork up the transmission. Anybody give me a clue what that is?

First, welcome to the board! Second, doesn't sound normal to me ... Unless, I'm not understanding what you're describing. Anyone else with a GT and insight to the noise?

There is a Technical Service Bulletin for the 3650 that came out in late April/May (not 100% sure), though I am not clear to what the bulletin covered. I think it had to do with the synchros, so it may be different from the problems you are describing.

I'll see if I can dig the TS Bulletin up somewhere.

Here it is . . .

And Welcome!

Something sounds amiss. Since its still under warranty, I'd take it in to have it checked for the TSB like Jason said. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.

Make sure you let the car idle for 3 - 4 minutes on cold starts. Try shifting at higher rpms. If that doesn't resolve the problem I would have Ford check it out.

If I was you, I'd have Ford do the TSB mentioned above, under warranty and no cost to you.

yeah, it definitely sounds wrong. i have an 04 and luckily havent had any problems. take it to ford, especially since the TSB is for the synchros. dont want to get stranded somewhere or have the tranny lock up

Thanks all for the info. I looked at that TSB posted here, but that didn't quite describe the condition/noise. I did, however, do a little more digging for TSBs on the net and came across a summary for TSB 17510 (from Jan 04) which applies to 04 Mustang powertrains. It said, "Driveline clunk during gear changes and/or quick acceleration after coast". (There was a similar one for Cobras on TSB 16069). That describes it exactly, but didn't give a cause or remedy. Anybody got more info on that? Don't really want to take it in if not necessary (inside of two weeks from buying it).

Man . . . I hate reading those TSB :notnice: !! They make me think something is wrong if I hear even the faintest sound, creak, clunk, etc.

But I'm sure glad they are 'out there' in case something is REALLY wrong with the car.

Mike, here's your answer (and mine) on the TSB you mentioned.

Thanks alot....that answers it. I'm satisfied now that it's just a "normal" noise and I'm not prematurely wearing out clutch and driveline parts. Never heard that from my other cars....then again, they were 4-cyl economy cars. Appreciate the help!

This Bullitt/TR3650 owner seems to have done some hands-on research of his own and came up with a good combination. I think I'm gonna follow his advice and use 3.4 quarts of Texaco Dexron III.
