Running Rich - black soot

Hey all, I have a 1996 mustang cobra with a vortech supercharger, running 42lb injectors, engine has been built. I put out 473rwhp at 6300rpm, but go too lean at higher rpms. So, the dyno shop said that my injectors are limiting me since I already have a 255 intank pump with the vortech kit booster pump (t-rex). This kind of makes sense since some charts i've seen say that 42lb injectors are only good for 485rwhp on a blown car. The suggestion was go to 60lb injectors.

However, I still seem to run fairly rich (friend was driving behind me and couldn't stand the smell of gas). I also have a little bit of black soot coming out of the exhaust when I'm just driving around, but there is a TON when I'm driving hard. Is this a sign that I might need to run some cleaner to get some carbon buildup off the internals? I've also had some white smoke come out the exhaust when I start it up after sitting for 4-5 days. I've never seen blue smoke come out so I don't think its oil.

Any one have experience with this? Any suggestions on things to look for?

I'm assuming the cars been tuned?...

Black smoke - gas
Blue smoke - oil
White smoke - coolant

42lb injectors should still work fine for you.

Check your coolant temp sensors. It can cause your car to run really rich... did the same for mine.

Yeah it has been dyno tuned. Now I will say that my gas mileage since being tuned has increase from about 11mpg to 15mpg, but I'm still getting the large amounts of soot. I'll check on the coolant temp sensor.

Thanks for the replies.

I think the tune is off. If it smells rich of gas at part throttle then the fuel curves are to rich for the engine load. I'd highly suggest a tune from an SCT dealer that will take into account all of your mods and the condition of the engine.

There is an SCT chip in the car and it was tuned by an SCT capable dyno shop. I might try another shop to see what happens.

Thanks for the advice.

Do you have the Dyno graphs that show A/F? Try Doug at Bamachips
