Rear brake grinding / axle problem

The passenger side rear brake started grinding but like an idiot I kept driving instead of fixing. Anyways the last time I drove it when I'd hit the brakes it started making alot of noise like it was chattering then when I got it home I jacked it up removed both rear tires and noticed that I have a quarter inch of travel on the passenger side rear axle. I allready am expecting to buy a new rotor and possibly calipers but how do I fix the play in the axle? I've been reduced to driving my old beater datsun 4x4 or riding my ridgid framed chopper and its cold out there Anyone got any hints for me?

play as in up and down or as in inward and outward??
It should have some inward/outward play. That is normal. If it moves up and down, that is a bearing problem. Did you see any oil leakage? Is your tire wearing funny on that side? Is the inside tread wearing quicker than the outter?
