Rear axle questions

Both my rear tire wear out on the insides much quicker than the out side of the tires. The car has had a tough life. You can see the passengers side wobbling when I have it jacked up and spinning.
My question is what are the chances that the housing is bent as well as the axles.
Can I replace just the axles or should I replace the end bearings and seals also?
The seals are not leaking. Is there some adjustment on the rear axle to fix this tire wear or do you just figure both axles are bent? A whole new rear axle is around 800+ axles are about 100 bucks a piece from summit.

Haven't seen your car in person, but maybe new bearings and seals could fix it.
How do you know the axle is bent?

That type of wear is not from bearings. I would start with a good alignment shop to verify the suspension is okay.

the car has been in an acident or two. One that very well could have bent an axle. When I jack the car up and put the car in drive I can see the back tire wobble a good 1/8 inch like an axle is bent.
They can adjust the rear end during an alignment? I have heard of 4 wheel alignments but thats on fwd cars. Its just very odd that the insides of the rear tires are wearing faster than the outsides.
The rim was been replaced a while ago. I will try a different rim just to make sure its not a bad rim

Can someone please explain to me how you "align" a solid axle on a Ford Fox3/SN95/S197 chassis without a plasma cutter and MIG setup. Be detailed and specific in your answer.

Glenn;

If the tire is moving that much then yes something is bent. It could be your axles, wheels, or at worst your axle housing. If you pull the axles you can have a machine shop check their trueness. At the same time your can replace the outer bearings (which need to be pressed on) and the outer seals. If this doesn't fix it then your housing is bent and will need to be replaced.

If you have 1/8" up and down play in the wheel I don't see how it doesn't shake your fillings out at speed.

is there a simple way to check the housing to see if its bent. I am thinking it might be seeing how the drivers side tire wears funny but doesn't seem to whobble. I have seen a few rear ends selling for around 800 thats 799.00 more than I have.
Is it a clip that holds the axles in .... more or less?

Not that I know of. I do know if an axle housing and axle is bent even the slightest degree it can cause some funny handling issues. Then, if your local alignment shop aligns the vehicle off of the rear wheels it can hide a lot of nasty issues.

More or less. (From my cloudy memory) You pull the rear cover and take a small bolt out to remove the crosspin inside the differential. Then push the axles in a little bit and pull the clip off the inside end of the axle and slide it all the way out.

I s the car in question the LL gt or "her" 00 ? Either way, the traction -lock clutches may be suspect. As you go into a long sweeping turn, the inside tire tread no longer is flat to the road because the inertia of the body tends to put a "side push" on the tire and body towards the outside of the turn . With just that little bit of tire contacting the road, if the clutches are too tight, the outer wheel might force the inner wheel to spin the same speed as the outer wheel and , with less tread on the ground, which wheel is going to give up traction first ? . But a simple way to check the housing is let the weight of the car rest on the tires and take a " short " ( 12 inch ) carpenter's level and see how "plumb " or, perpendicular the wheel is to the ground . The bubble on the level should fall exactly between the lines because the back tires/wheels must be 90 degrees from the road surface for even tire wear. If the top of the wheel is tipped in, pull the level out at the top and get the bubble between the lines, and note the distance . But do this with wheels that don't wobble when they are spun ! Then, measure only the rim. Do this by placing fabricated "stand out " spacers of equal thickness at 6 0'clock and 12 o'clock on the edge of the rims to do your measurement from, so you are not measuring the "bulge" of the tire .

its on the 00. Man its takes some doing to bend the rear end like that. Here's a picture.
Looks like I will be looking for the whole rear end I guess.
I'll post a pic or two later if I can find them from when my Daughter went 4 wheeling a while back

Please try what I posted before you go shopping for a rear housing . Photos can sometimes be deceiving . I'm sure you heard of an optical allusion . Don't trust your eyes . Measure it first !

8.8. I believe all the housings are the same from 87 til 04, only the axle lengths were different. Please verify this info before taking it as fact (hopefully someone will chime in).
