PLEASE help with 96 GT exhaust!!!
Hey guys I need some advice on exhaust if you can??? I just recently bought a '96 GT and noticed it doesn't sound like a stang at all. I went underneath to see what kind of exhaust it had and this is what I found...it appears to have a 3" catless o/r x-pipe (brand unsure) which leads into big 6" round magnaflow race mufflers about a foot long, and then I noticed they've cut the pipe about 5" from the muffler just before the axle. The sound is a deep growl with zero raspiness and imo is sounds like poo, not to mention it's droning me out within the car. From what I see it also has stock headers. I want the car to sound better than this, not to mention run better because right now the throttle response isn't snappy like it's getting too much air (but that's another story). A friend of a friend has a set of slp loudmouth 1's (axle back) for dirt cheap he'll sell me but my question is should I install the loudmouths with those magnaflow race cans or eliminate those cans and go straight pipe, or put on a different set of mufflers? I want it loud and mean so...?? I saw a youtube vid with a '96 GT having catless o/r x-pipe with slp loudmouths and thought it sounded great. However, I don't know if he had a full slp exhaust with slp mufflers or without? Should I keep the magnaflow race mufflers with the slp loudmouth axle backs, replace the magnaflows with something else with the slp's or completely eliminate the mufflers all together and run the slp's that way? All I know right now is it sounds like total crap and it's gotta go!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

The first thing I bought for my Galaxie some years back was exhaust - mainly because it was so rusted the fumes went right into the cab until you hit forty. When it was up on the rack, the muffler shop obliged me by placing different brands on the exhaust so you could pick the sound you wanted. I would think a shop would be able to do the same.

I think I will either get some slp lm2 bullet mufflers (since the lm1 mufflers are completely hollow), in place of the magnaflow resonators or flowmaster 44's. The catless 3" o/r x-pipe should compliment either of these setups and give me what I'm looking for. I would be tempted to try no mufflers at all with just the slp lm1 axle backs but I'm thinking that will just be loud and lack having sound quality.
